Inflation, new features and demand are all some factors that can contribute to the car prices going up. That’s why some experts recommend buying a car now before the end of the year.
GOBankingRates reached out to Nigel Tunnacliffe, co-founder and CEO of Coastline Academy to get his take on what cars are going to increase in price come 2025.
In contrast, here are five new cars that will still be affordable next year.
Volkswagen Jetta
Tunnacliffe pointed out that the Jetta has new features, which will cause it to be a notably higher price than the 2024 model. “The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta comes with a few notable updates to the 2024 version, with a few styling updates and improved tech features,” he said. Tunnacliffe added that the performance, however, is predicted to be about the same as the 2024 model.
Tesla Model 3
Want to own a Tesla Model 3? Tunnacliffe recommended buying a used one, rather than opting for a brand new 2025 model. “An established leader in the EV space, the Model 3 remains perennially popular, but it still commands a high price tag even within its class. Buyers who want to take advantage of its excellent electric powertrain and high build quality may want to consider opting for a used option from a previous year. The Model 3 is a generally sturdy, reliable vehicle and I personally own a used Model 3 that runs virtually like new,” he added.
MINI Cooper
The MINI Cooper will see a big price increase in 2025, despite being considered relatively affordable in the past. “The Cooper hardtop model has seen consistent price increases over the past half-decade, and this trend is likely to continue through 2025,” Tunnacliffe explained. “A combination of increased demand and a number of overhauls to design and aesthetics have all contributed to these ongoing increases.”
Mazda CX-5
Popularity is driving up the price for this 2025 Mazda model. “The Mazda CX-5 has consistently been a contender for top spot in the SUV category, offering a smooth, comfortable ride that makes it a favorite for everyday driving,” Tunnacliffe said. “However, it already sits at the higher end of the price scale for SUVs and its price is poised to rise in 2025.”
Tunnacliffe recommended getting a 2024 or a used model, as drivers won’t see too many differences. “While it still has plenty of value to offer, the 2025 model is not radically distinct from the 2024, making the latter a good choice for those who are accustomed to the CX-5’s particular design and functionality.”
Ford Explorer
The 2025 Ford Explorer will be much more expensive than the 2024, but like other cars on this list, Tunnacliffe pointed out that most buyers won’t see a big difference if they decide to buy the older model. “While there is much to recommend the Explorer, the 2025 model features fairly minimal improvements when compared to the 2024, with only a few minor aesthetic changes and a couple of added tech features,” he said. “Though these changes are welcome, they are accompanied by an increased price tag that does not fully justify the added value.”
