For budget-conscious retirees in the market for a new car, the purchase price is definitely a concern, but so is fuel efficiency. According to The Motley Fool, the average American spends about $179 on gas per month. Most people in retirement spend way less on transportation than when they were doing their daily commute to work, but fuel can still be a major expense.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) compiled a list of a dozen of the worst-performing mass-market cars sold in 2024 in the U.S. This list “consists of primarily large, inefficient gas-guzzlers,” so taking a look at this before you buy could help you save money at the pump during your golden years.

At the top of the list is the 2024 Mercedes-AMG G 63. It’s a gas-powered SUV that will cost you over $4,000 per year to fuel up, and the agency called it “the worst-performing vehicle of more than 1,200 models assessed.” On the other end of the spectrum, a gas-powered vehicle on the ACEEE’s list of greener choices has an estimated annual fuel cost of $1,189.

Here is how much you’ll be spending on these 12 gas-guzzling cars that you should definitely stay away from in retirement.
