Used-car sales in the United States should see a slight increase in 2025, with Cox Automotive projecting a 1% year-over-year gain to 37.8 million units. Jonathan Smoke, Cox’s chief economist, credited the expected uptick to a “stabilizing economy” and a healthy job market. This should be good news for both buyers and sellers of used cars — especially vehicles that command the best resale values.

“We’ve navigated restrictive rates, slowing job growth and increasing unemployment. But as we end 2024, momentum is back on our side,” Smoke said in December comments to the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association. “Buy now — or at least sooner rather than later — seems to be the new marching cry.”

Given recent events, it’s useful to keep in mind that those remarks were made before the current unease over President Donald Trump’s efforts to slash the federal government and impose stiff tariffs on key trading partners. The latter effort includes a 25% tariff on foreign-made cars and auto parts, which could push prices up for all types of vehicles.

For now, used car prices are falling, according to data from CarEdge. But that probably won’t last long. Car sales tend to go up in the spring — which means demand and prices will rise, as well. GOBankingRates looked to Kelley Blue Book (KBB) experts to find the top 10 vehicles for resale value in 2025.

Used Car Pricing and Resale Value

As with any product, some used cars command a higher sales price than others, based on factors such as reliability, performance and consumer demand. The average new vehicle will be worth about 44.6% of its original sticker price after 60 months, according to KBB’s recent report. However, the best autos for resale value will return an average of nearly 58% to owners.

That difference might not seem like much, but it can add up to a lot of money. As KBB noted, for a $35,000 vehicle it works out to a difference of more than $4,500 over a five-year buy-own-sell ownership cycle.
