Buying a new SUV can always be something of a tricky proposition. While they are often quite roomy, family-friendly and loaded with a slew of special features, they also tend to be far less fuel-efficient than cars, and far more expensive. If you do plan on purchasing an SUV this year, you certainly don’t want to pay more than is necessary at the pump. That’s where the following SUVs come in.
GOBankRates studied the best mileage rankings from various SUV experts concerning the 2025 model year, and found these five rides to be the most fuel-efficient buys for your buck. Want to get the best possible mileage per gallon (mpg) with your new SUV? Keep reading.
2025 Kia Niro
- Combined Fuel Economy: Up to 53 mpg.
There’s no argument here — True Car, Car and Driver and Cars.com all ranked the Kia Niro as their No. 1 most fuel-efficient sport utility vehicle of 2025. Even without an all-wheel drive model, and what True Car describes as a slightly “underpowered” base engine, the Kia Niro still offers the best fuel economy ratings for an SUV in 2025 at up to 53 miles per gallon. It also comes with plug-in hybrid options for usable all-electric range.
2025 Kia Sportage
- Combined Fuel Economy: Up to 43 mpg.
Ranked second with True Car and Cars.com, and third with Car and Driver, the Sportage is definitely a top pick if you’re looking for an SUV with excellent fuel efficiency. It doesn’t come with many upgrades when compared to previous incarnations of the Sportage, but why mess with a good thing like 43 miles per gallon?
2025 Lexus UX
- Combined Fuel Economy: Up to 43 mpg.
This hybrid might be a little small with a somewhat tight rear seat and limited cargo space, but it still earns the No. 3 spots on the True Car and Cars.com lists, and No. 2 on the Car and Driver list, thanks to earning well over 40 miles per gallon on the road, as well as extremely advanced interior tech features.
2025 Honda CR-V
- Combined Fuel Economy: Up to 40 mpg.
While the CR-V didn’t rank at all for the team at Cars.com, both True Car and Cars and Driver placed it as their fourth pick for the most fuel-efficient SUVs in 2025. While it may be a little more expensive than some of its competitors — with a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $31,450 — its spacious cabin and “excellent fuel economy and safety ratings,” per True Car, make it an SUV well worth considering.
2025 Ford Escape
- Combined Fuel Economy: Up to 39 mpg.
Sure, the Ford Escape comes in a bit low with Cars.com at No. 18, but it’s No. 8 on the list with True Car, and even higher at No. 6 with Car and Driver. This is all thanks to a myriad of powertrain options (including two hybrid models), a comfy and spacious interior and a rather quiet highway ride in which you’ll barely notice you’re on the road (all while getting nearly 40 miles per gallon).
