Looking for a new SUV? If you’re paying attention to politics, you might be wondering what the best option will be — for your lifestyle and your wallet — under the upcoming Donald Trump presidency. And if you’re a boomer, retired or approaching retirement, you’re probably also considering the best option for your fixed income.
Before you let the headlines drive your car-buying decisions, here’s some straight talk from auto expert Chris Pyle of JustAnswer about what really matters. How much does the president affect the price of cars?
The Politics Reality Check
“The president in office does not really influence what car you should buy or want to buy,” Pyle explained.
While policies might shift around emissions or incentives, your focus should be on finding the right vehicle for your needs and budget. You will want to consider where the vehicle is manufactured, if Trump’s planned tariffs make imported vehicles more expensive, but it’s as important to choose an SUV that has the features and functionality you need.
For the Budget-Conscious
Pyle recommended the Kia Sorento or Carnival. “Both are well-priced, have good warranties and are very dependable.”
That makes them perfect if you want reliability without a lot of fancy tech you’ll never use. “Baby boomers are not really into all these electronics, they recall hand crank windows. So your base model vehicle still fits them,” Pyle said.
Plus, while Kia is based in South Korea, it has a manufacturing facility in the U.S., so it’s possible it will be less affected by potential tariffs.
For the Adventure Seekers
Planning some retirement fun? U.S.-based Ford has options that Pyle recommends.
“Ford Explorer or Expedition — these give you the option to start towing a heavy trailer for out-of-the-house fun,” he said. Perfect for those weekend getaways or cross-country RV adventures.
For the Family Haulers
The “Chevy Equinox, Traverse or Tahoe” made Pyle’s list, because “you can haul a good amount of cargo, grandkids and a towable toy behind you.”
These multi-purpose vehicles won’t let you down when the whole family shows up — and they’re also manufactured in the U.S.
Bottom line? Focus on what fits your lifestyle, not the headlines. Whether you’re saving for retirement or ready to hit the road in an RV, there’s an SUV that fits the bill.
