Gasoline can add up fast. Therefore, searching for a new — to you — car with good gas mileage is a decision you probably won’t regret. Depending on how much you drive, investing in a car with good gas mileage can save you a notable amount.

GOBankingRates spoke with Alan Gelfand, owner of German Car Depot in Hollywood, Florida, to find out what used cars have the best gas mileage. Here are the five models he recommended.

Toyota Prius (2017-2019)

  • 2017 model starting price (used): $15,894
  • 2018 model starting price (used): $17,026
  • 2019 model starting price (used): $17,014

It probably isn’t surprising that this one made the list.

“The Toyota Prius remains a top choice for fuel efficiency, boasting an EPA-estimated 50-plus mpg combined,” Gelfand said. “Its reliable hybrid system and spacious interior make it ideal for commuters and families alike.”

He said hybrid technology has come a long way, so you can still expect to realize great savings on gas from older models.

Honda Civic (2018-2020)

  • 2018 model starting price (used): $14,993
  • 2019 model starting price (used): $16,166
  • 2020 model starting price (used): $16,775

“The Honda Civic is well known for its longevity and fuel efficiency,” Gelfand said. “The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine in the EX and higher trims offers a remarkable balance of power and economy, reaching around 36 mpg combined.”

Gelfand said that’s not the only reason a 2018-2020 Honda Civic can be a great purchase.

“This car combines reliability with low maintenance costs — ideal for budget-conscious drivers,” he said.

Mazda3 (2019-2021)

  • 2019 model starting price (used): $14,864
  • 2020 model starting price (used): $16,966
  • 2021 model starting price (used): $17,118

“Mazda’s commitment to fuel efficiency without sacrificing driving dynamics shines in the Mazda3,” Gelfand said. “With an average of 30 mpg combined in the 2.5-liter engine models, it’s sporty yet efficient, making it a great choice for those who enjoy a fun drive but want to save at the pump.”

If you’re looking for a sporty ride, the Mazda3 can allow you to check that box without breaking your budget.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid (2017-2019)

  • 2017 model starting price (used): $8,760
  • 2018 model starting price (used): $10,060
  • 2019 model starting price (used): $12,070

“The Ioniq Hybrid rivals the Prius with an estimated 55 mpg combined, making it one of the most fuel-efficient non-electric cars on the market,” he said. “Its comfortable interior and advanced tech make it a smart choice for those prioritizing both economy and comfort.”

If you’re looking for an alternative to a Prius, this hybrid might fit the bill.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI (2015)

  • 2015 model starting price (used): $6,959

If you’re looking for a fuel-efficient car, don’t let the age of this one deter you.

“While older, the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta TDI offers impressive diesel fuel economy, reaching up to 42 mpg combined,” he said. “Known for solid German engineering, it’s a fun, efficient ride that’s hard to beat in the used market, especially for fans of German cars.”

This can serve as a double win if you’re on a budget, as the car has impressive gas mileage and is available at a low price.
