Tesla has revolutionized the electric vehicle market, but new models often come with a hefty price tag. For budget-conscious buyers looking to join the Tesla revolution, used models can offer significant savings while still providing the cutting-edge technology and performance Tesla is known for.

Here are four used Tesla models that offer lasting value at a lower cost.

Tesla Model S (2016-2018)

The Model S remains Tesla’s flagship sedan, and models from 2016-2018 strike an excellent balance between features and affordability. These years saw significant improvements in battery technology and autopilot capabilities, while depreciation has made them more accessible.

Chris Pyle, auto expert at JustAnswer, shared: “The Model S seems to last the longest and can be owned for a good price when used. There are plenty that are well past 180K miles, but the big expense of a battery or replacement electric motor is coming.”

Key features To Look For

  • 75D or 100D variants for extended range
  • Enhanced autopilot hardware
  • Large touchscreen infotainment system

When shopping, pay attention to the battery’s health and remaining warranty coverage. While these models can last well beyond 150,000 miles, eventual battery replacement costs should be factored into long-term ownership plans.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range (2018-2020)

The Model 3 brought Tesla’s innovation to a more affordable price point, and early Long Range models now offer excellent value on the used market. These vehicles provide impressive range, performance and Tesla’s minimalist interior design.

Pyle added, “The Model 3 is another that seems to last well and can be a good used buy. However, like all electric cars, each charge results in slightly less capacity over time, equating to less distance you can travel.”

Advantages of Used Model 3 Long Range

  • 310-plus miles of EPA-rated range
  • Dual motor all-wheel drive
  • Access to Tesla’s Supercharger network

You’re looking for models with the ‘Premium Interior’ package. While battery degradation is obviously a concern, Tesla’s battery management system has proven that it can maintain range over time.

Tesla Model X (2017-2019)

If you need more space, a used Model X is the equivalent of an SUV. The distinctive falcon-wing doors and giant windshield make it a head-turner, for sure.

Key Considerations for Used Model X

  • Six- or seven-seat configurations available
  • Impressive towing capacity (up to 5,000 pounds)
  • Enhanced autopilot capabilities

The Model X’s complex door mechanisms and air suspension can lead to higher maintenance costs, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. However, for families seeking a unique and capable electric SUV, a well-maintained used Model X can provide years of service.

Tesla Model Y Long Range (2020-2021)

As Tesla’s newest model, used Model Y options are limited but becoming increasingly available. Early Long Range models offer an excellent compromise between the Model 3’s efficiency and Model X’s practicality.

Benefits of a Used Model Y

  • Up to 326 miles of range
  • Spacious interior with optional third row
  • Latest Tesla technology and features

While the Model Y hasn’t been on the market long enough to fully assess long-term reliability, it benefits from Tesla’s years of experience with electric powertrains. As more enter the used market, prices are likely to become increasingly competitive.

Important Considerations for Used Tesla Buyers

If you’re in the market for a used Tesla, keep in mind that you need to check out the battery health, warranty coverage, software updates, charging costs and service and repair costs.

Pyle offered some thoughts on this. “When it comes time for a new battery, they are not cheap,” he cautioned. “Parts and labor are often above $10,000 when the vehicle is worth less or not much more than that. The new battery raises the vehicle value some, but not much. This scares a lot of people from purchasing a used Tesla, especially an older one with high miles.”

With all that in mind, you can move forward with the knowledge to find the right Tesla for you.
