President Donald Trump announced on March 26 that he will be implementing 25% tariffs on all autos and auto parts that are not made in America, with the tariffs beginning on April 2, per Axios. It’s a political decision that is likely to have significant financial consequences for American shoppers.
When tariffs are applied on automakers making their cars or parts elsewhere, their response is to raise their prices in order to cover the tariffs. Those increased prices are then felt by the American consumers. Furthermore, preexisting tariffs also impact American automakers already making their vehicles in the United States — as the costs of auto manufacturing materials continues to rise (due to tariffs), so too do the prices of those American cars.
These are all reasons why budget-conscious buyers in the market for new cars should consider the following rides (some of the cheapest available in America), in order to weather the most recent tariff hikes without busting bank accounts.
2025 Nissan Versa S
- Price: $18,330
The Nissan Versa S is currently the cheapest new car available on the market, per MotorTrend. It still contains a lot of bang for its buck, with a roomy trunk and good fuel economy for a sedan. It may not be quick, but for less than $20,000 it will still get you from point A to B in style.
2025 Chevrolet Trax
- Price: $21,495
Good fuel economy, sleek and stylish design and a very low entry price make the Trax a perfect purchase for a driver wanting a ride that’s a little bigger than a hatchback but not so large as to be an SUV.
2025 Kia Soul
- Price: $21,315
For a compact ride, the Kia Soul is rather spacious on the inside, per MotorTrend.
2025 Hyundai Venue
- Price: $21,550
Kelley Blue Book (KBB) called the Hyundai Venue the most inexpensive crossover SUV money can buy in America. With that title also comes solid gas mileage and an expansive warranty.
2025 Nissan Sentra
- Price: $22,730
A highly stylish design and a powerful safety suite — these are just two of the reasons MotorTrend recommends the Sentra, one of the cheapest sedans on the market.
2025 Hyundai Elantra
- Price: $23,025
The Elantra comes very highly rated in regards to its impressive overall safety features, as well as solid fuel economy for the price.
2025 Kia K4
- Price: $23,165
KBB has noted that the newest iteration of the K4 comes loaded with a new array of driving technology, spacious interior design and a lovely exterior build.
2025 Nissan Kicks
- Price: $23,220
KBB has called the Kicks a ride marked by “tons of personality” — it has a fresh and futuristic aesthetic that gives the subcompact SUV a lot of flash (not to mention Shield 360 driver-assist technology).
2025 Volkswagen Jetta
- Price: $23,200
MotorTrend described the Jetta as both refreshing and stylish, loaded as it is with a roomy trunk and backseat area, and all-new overall bodywork for the long-running Jetta line.
2025 Toyota Corolla
- Price: $23,310
The Corolla comes in both hatchback and sedan body styles, and MotorTrend finds it to be a rather comfortable brand with plush seats and “incredibly” efficient driving.
