The Cybertruck is Tesla’s only model that’s comparable to the Ram 1500. After all, both are classified as full-size pickups competing in the same segment. Even so, the Cybertruck has unique capabilities that differentiate it from traditional pickups, and of course, its love-it-or-hate-it aesthetic sets it apart from the rest of the truck world even further.
However, the biggest contrasts are their purchase prices and the power that drives them.
The Cybertruck starts at $79,990, nearly double the 2025 Ram 1500‘s $40,275 entry-level MSRP. With that level of sticker price disparity, Tesla has to compete on ownership expenses and the promise of substantially lower monthly charging costs than what Ram owners would expect to pay per month at the pump.
Here’s a breakdown and comparison of the monthly costs to charge a Tesla versus an ICE Ram 1500.
Gas vs. Electric Trucks: The Numbers That Tell the Tale
The following is a breakdown of the key metrics that reveal the cost of charging a Cybertruck versus what you’ll pay to gas up a 1500 every month.
- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates the Cybertruck uses 41kWh per 100 miles.
- The DOE estimates the Ram 1500 gets 23 combined mpg, or 4.3 gallons per 100 miles.
- According to AAA, the national average cost of gas is roughly $3.12 per gallon as of October 8.
- The Energy Information Administration cites the 2025 average cost of residential electric power at $0.17 per kWh.
Fueling a Ram 1500 Costs Nearly Twice as Much as Charging a Cybertruck
The following analysis utilizes the previous data to demonstrate that charging a Cybertruck costs nearly twice the price of fueling a Ram 1500.
Tesla Cybertruck
- The average Cybertruck costs $6.97 to charge per 100 miles.
- Assuming 15,000 miles driven per year, the Cybertruck costs $1,045.50 per year to charge.
- The monthly electric bill comes out to $87.13.
Ram 1500
- The average Ram costs $13.42 to fuel per 100 miles.
- Assuming 15,000 miles driven per year, the Ram will cost you $2,013 at the gas pump annually.
- The monthly cost to fuel the average Ram 1500 is $167.75.
It All Comes Down To Where You Charge Your Cybertruck
The previous analysis used residential electric rates and presumed cost-efficient at-home charging for the Cybertruck — but the math and the advantage change dramatically when charging on the go.
According to AAA, the national average cost at all commercial and public charging stations is $0.37 per kWh. That works out to $15.17 per 100 miles for the Cybertruck instead of $6.97 — more than double.
Cybertruck drivers who charge exclusively at public stations pay $2,275 per year, or $189.58 per month, forfeiting their entire ownership-cost advantage, plus $21.83 per month, to the average Ram 1500 driver.
