If you’ve ever downloaded a new app or sprung for an in-app purchase only to find that it isn’t exactly what you expected or wasn’t worth the money, the return process isn’t as easy as taking a physical item back to a store. Refund policies differ depending on what you bought. Here’s how to get started on your Google Play refund.

How To Get a Refund for an App

Customers who purchased an app through the Google Play Store within the last 48 hours may apply for a refund directly through their Google Play account. Before messaging the app’s developers, check how long it’s been since you made your purchase. If you’re still within the Google Play refund window, you’ll have an easier time requesting a refund. For purchases fewer than two days old, you can request a refund by following these steps.

  1. Open the Google Play Store or use your browser to navigate to the website.
  2. Navigate to your account profile. If using the Google Play mobile app, click the three horizontal lines in the corner.
  3. Once you navigate to your profile, you’ll see a list of options. Select the option labeled “Account,” then select the option labeled “Payment History.”
  4. Your purchase history will show a list of apps you’ve bought. Look through the list and select the app for which you’re seeking a refund.
  5. Click on the button labeled “Refund.” The app will ask you if you are sure you want a refund. Confirm the refund by pressing the “Yes” button.
  6. Check that you receive an email notification confirming that your refund has gone through, and keep a copy for your records.
  7. Finally, check your bank account to be sure the money is returned.

How To Get a Refund for an App More Than 48 Hours After Purchase

If it’s been more than 48 hours since you downloaded the app you want to be refunded for, Google Play can no longer refund you directly. Instead, you’ll need to contact the developer of the app to request a refund, which isn’t guaranteed. If you’d like to try to get your money back, here’s how to get started.

  5. On your purchase receipt, scroll until you see a button labeled “Developer Contact.”
  6. Google Play requires developers to maintain an open channel for customer communication. You should see a contact button in your purchase receipt. Select the contact method to begin the refund.
  7. You will be directed to a complaint form. Submit a detailed request regarding why you want a refund.

From here, it’s up to the developer whether or not you get a refund. Developers are not obligated to provide customers with refunds for app purchases after 48 hours. However, you may be able to troubleshoot a solution or negotiate a refund directly if you explain why you want your money back or how the app failed to deliver.

How To Get a Refund for In-App Purchases

If you’ve made an in-app purchase that isn’t what you expected, it may be possible to get a refund. However, the process is more difficult than requesting a refund for the app itself. You’ll need to go through the developer to claim your refund, whether you purchased the app or made an in-app purchase.

To initiate your refund, follow the same steps detailed above on how to contact the developer directly. When you do, you should explain your situation and ask for a refund on your in-app purchase.

Good To Know

Developers are not obligated to provide customers with a refund on in-app purchases. To maximize your chance of getting a refund, be respectful and honest with the developer, explaining in detail why you want a refund.

How To Get a Refund for Media Purchases

If you accidentally paid too much for an ebook you could get for free from the library, bought the wrong song or purchased the same movie your roommate just downloaded, you can return it to the Google Play Store for a refund — but you have to do so within a week, and before you’ve downloaded or played the item. Here’s what to do.

  1. Log in to your account on the Google Play website.
  2. Click the top right icon to open your profile, and find your payments and order history.
  3. Select the order you want to return and choose “Request a refund” or “Report a problem.”
  4. From there, choose the option that best describes your reason for wanting a refund.
  5. When you complete the form, indicate that you’d like a refund.

Google will email you with a decision about your request.

Final Thoughts

While it’s possible to get a refund for a digital purchase on the Google Play Store within 48 hours of the purchase, you are not entitled to your money back. To make sure you don’t miss out, take note of the date and time of purchase. This will make it easier to submit your request before the 48-hour period ends and secure your refund.
