Marshalls holiday section is packed with stuff marked down from regular retail prices. But not everything is actually worth buying. I picked through its current holiday deals to find five items that middle-class families can actually use without feeling like they wasted money on seasonal junk that sits in the garage for 11 months.

Tommy Hilfiger Plush Sherpa Reversible Throw

  • Price: $24.99

This blanket normally runs $35 but Marshalls has it for $25. The plaid side looks festive without being obnoxiously Christmas-y, and the sherpa reverse side means it’s actually warm. You can use this thing year-round, not just during December.

Throws make decent gifts because everyone needs blankets. Toss it over your couch for holiday guests or wrap it up for someone who always complains about being cold. At $25, you’re not going broke if the person already owns 47 blankets.

6-Pack Santa’s Workshop Dinner Plates

  • Price: $49.99

Fifty bucks for six plates sounds expensive until you see they’re regularly $90. These aren’t paper plates you use once and toss. They’re actual holiday dinner plates you can reuse every year.

If you host Christmas dinner or any holiday gathering, having dedicated festive plates makes the table look more put-together. Regular plates work fine, but holiday plates feel special without requiring much effort. Six plates covers a small family or fills in if your regular set is missing pieces.

5-Quart Cast Iron Gingerbread Dutch Oven

  • Price: $69.99

This one’s $105 normally. A cast iron Dutch oven lasts forever, and you’ll use it way beyond Christmas. The gingerbread design makes it festive enough to put on the table during holidays, but it’s still just a functional cooking pot.

Dutch ovens handle roasts, stews, bread baking and pretty much everything else. This isn’t a decorative item that collects dust. You’re buying a legitimate kitchen tool that happens to have holiday theming. For $70, you’re getting something useful that also looks good sitting on your stove in December.

Brooks Brothers Christmas Plaid Blanket

  • Price: $39.99

This is another blanket, but hear me out. Blankets are one of those things where you think you have enough until winter hits and everyone’s fighting over the good ones.

The Christmas plaid, which is normally $52, works for the whole season without being too specific. It’s not covered in Santas or snowmen that scream “PUT ME AWAY ON DECEMBER 26TH.” Plaid feels winter-appropriate from November through February. The made-in-Turkey label suggests better quality than the cheap throws that fall apart after three washes.

Gold Mercury Midnight Citrus Candle

  • Price: $29.99

This candle is normally $50, which is absurd for a candle. But $30 for 60 ounces isn’t terrible. That’s a massive candle that’ll last through the entire holiday season and probably into January.

The gold mercury glass container looks nice enough to leave out. Once the candle’s done, you can clean out the jar and use it for something else. Citrus scents work for winter without being specifically “Christmas cookie” smells that get old fast. If you’re buying candles anyway, getting one that’s 60 ounces for $30 beats buying three smaller ones.
