Is Walmart Open on Thanksgiving?

The aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic saw many businesses operate in a new landscape. This is true across the board, but especially during the holiday season. With labor shortages and supply chain disruptions, companies have had to reassess their stance on what is the true cost of being open, and when it is worth it.

Walmart is no stranger to navigating these questions and coming up with new answers. In 2020, for the first time, Walmart stores closed their doors on Thanksgiving. In part due to the side effects of a global pandemic, but also as a form of employee appreciation. All Walmart locations were closed in 2021 and will do so again in 2022.

A New Tradition: Walmart Will Be Closed on Thanksgiving

Walmart’s new tradition of closing on Thanksgiving looks like it will be here to stay. In an appearance on the “Today Show” Walmart’s U.S. CEO stated “It’s a thing of the past. We’ll be closed on Thanksgiving.” He later went on to say, “Fortunately, all of our associates will be able to spend time with their loved ones this year.”

It’s a new era of holiday shopping. In the past, Walmart has opened on Thanksgiving just to expedite when customers could start shopping their Black Friday deals. One more thing Walmart employees are probably thankful for this year is not having to referee people fighting over discounted televisions on the actual holiday. This is not to say Black Friday deals won’t be happening at Walmart.

Black Friday at Walmart

Though Walmart may be closed on Thanksgiving, Black Friday is still alive and well. With deals starting even earlier in November, there is no longer a rush to flee from your turkey-clad table and stand in line for sweet Walmart sales. However, you may have to plan ahead for all of your Thanksgiving food and decor needs, as you won’t be able to run in for day-of shopping.

If you want to avoid holiday shopping in person altogether is always open. It has the same, if not greater, selection as your local Walmart with quick delivery options. If you do find yourself in a pinch on the day, it is good to know what stores are open on Thanksgiving to keep your options open.
