Halloween is right around the corner. You likely already have your stockpile of candy and costumes for the kids. But are your home and yard a scary sight, or safe enough to welcome trick-or-treaters?
Halloween safety encompasses several elements. First, you want to keep your home safe from thieves and vandals. Data from Travelers Insurance revealed that “vandalism and malicious mischief” claims rise 45% on Halloween, while theft claims rise 47% compared with year-round norms. You also want to minimize the risk of trips and falls on your property, which can lead to personal injury liability claims against your home insurance and even lawsuits.
Here are six affordable steps to keep your home safe this Halloween.
Also see five practical ways to cut costs this Halloween amid inflation.
1. Keep Walkways Clear
Halloween decorations can show your family’s holiday spirit. But keep walkways clear of clutter.
“Keep the walkway and entryway clear of extension cords, decorations and debris,” said Angi Orbann of Travelers Insurance, noting that trick-or-treaters may not be familiar with your property. “It’s important to walk around your home’s exterior and minimize hazards so visitors can safely navigate.”
2. Light the Way
You can use holiday lighting to illuminate a clear path, making it even safer for trick-or-treaters. A big spotlight in your front yard signals to trick-or-treaters that you’re available to participate in the fun and also improves safety.
3. Install Smart-Home Cameras and Motion-Sensing Light
To prevent theft if you’re not at home, consider installing motion-detecting lights and smart-home cameras. Often, cameras alone will deter vandals.
According to Consumer Reports, before you choose a home security camera, you’ll want to consider the type of camera you want, as well as your privacy needs and wants.
4. Leave the TV and Indoor Lights On
If you step out to take your own children trick-or-treating, you’ll still want to make sure your home is well lit. “Leave lights and the TV on to give the impression someone is home,” Orbann said.
This simple and affordable tactic can also help deter thieves.
5. Tell Neighbors Your Plans
Another way to keep your home safe for free? Talk to your neighbors first.
“Inform a neighbor that you’re leaving so they can keep an eye on your property,” Orbann said.
6. Lock It Up
Orbann shared another important reminder: “Make sure you’re locking doors, shutting garage doors, not leaving things open or your car unlocked,” she said.
Don’t leave belongings, like a purse or backpack, on your vehicle’s seat where they’re visible and could tempt a thief to break your car window.
Halloween often marks the start of the fall and winter holiday season. Being mindful of safety and extra vigilant about holiday risks can prevent unwelcome hardship from creeping into your celebrations.
