The U.S. inflation rate hit a nearly three-year low of 2.4% in September, continuing a months-long decline that has provided relief to consumers who’ve battled high prices for much of the decade. That relief has extended to gasoline prices, which have also fallen to new lows of late.

Nationally, the average gas price is $3.06 as of Nov. 21, 2024, according to AAA. That’s down from $3.13 a gallon in October, $3.22 in September and $3.50 a year prior. Some experts predict prices will keep falling even as the industry deals with various headwinds.

“Despite the threat of war and a hurricane season that is still percolating, domestic gasoline prices are edging lower,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in an Oct. 3 press release. “There are now 18 states east of the Rockies with averages below $3 a gallon. And OPEC+ is saying, at least for now, they will increase production starting Dec. 1, putting even more downward pressure on pump prices.”

Oil and gas prices will likely continue to decline in 2025 and beyond amid a rise in worldwide production, ABC 12 reported, citing a recent analysis from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

“[That] would move us into a very different energy world from the one we have experienced in recent years during the global energy crisis,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol in a statement. “It implies downward pressure on prices, providing some relief for consumers that have been hit hard by price spikes.”

Lower gas prices aren’t the only way you can save money at the pump. Here are four other ways to score the best gas savings in 2025.

Use a Gas App

Gas apps soared in popularity when inflation peaked a couple of years ago and average gas prices soared about $5 a gallon. With a gas app, you can enter your location and route and find the lowest gas prices in your area. GasBuddy is the most popular app for finding real-time prices at stations across the country, but it’s not the only one. Gas Guru is another app. AAA also has a mobile gas app, as do insurers such as GEICO and GPS services like Waze and MapQuest.

Join a Rewards Program

Numerous gas chains and retailers have rewards programs that offer discounted prices, cash-back rewards and other perks for fueling up. Among the leaders in this space are Walmart (through its Walmart+ program), Costco, Kroger, Safeway, Circle K, Pilot Flying J, Speedway and Amazon Prime.

As  CNBC recently reported, Amazon Prime’s new fuel savings program lets members save 10 cents a gallon at about 7,000 BP, Amoco and AMPM locations across the country. Amazon plans to expand the program in 2025 by adding electric vehicle charging discounts with BP Pulse.

Choose the Best Payment Option

Some gas stations offer a lower price if you pay with cash instead of a credit card — and that difference is usually from 10 to 15 cents a gallon, according to Consumer Reports. In some cases you might save as much as a dollar per gallon. If you don’t carry cash around, then another option is to pay with a cash-back or rewards credit card. Even though the credit card price might be higher than the cash price, the cash-back reward could end up getting you a better deal.

Build Loyalty Rewards

As with many other consumer purchases, when you buy all or most of your gas from a single brand or chain you build up loyalty points that can help you save money. Among the options are the Exxon Mobil Rewards program, Shell Fuel Rewards program, Inner Circle reward program from Circle K and Speedy Speedway Rewards program.
