Walmart is the go-to choice for millions of consumers who want to shop on a budget. The world’s biggest retail chain offers a massive inventory of products — as many as 60 million on the Walmart website at any given time — and many are available at deep discounts. Walmart also supports more than 35 categories and subcategories of products, ranging from groceries and home goods to apparel, electronics, tools and medicine.
The combination of low prices and a huge selection make Walmart an ideal destination if you only have $20 to spend. You’ll likely find everything you need there, which saves you the time (and gas) of having to drive elsewhere. Before heading out, though, you can maximize your spending by taking the right strategy, according to Melissa Cid, a consumer savings expert for MySavings.com.
“If you are looking for deep discounts, you’ll want to shop at Walmart on a weekday evening,” Cid, a mother of four, told GOBankingRates. “This is when markdowns for the next day happen, with 30% to 50%-off stickers on many soon-to-be expiring foods from the bakery, produce and meat departments. If there is a package of meat that is close to its sell-by-date, you can ask an employee in the meat department if they can add a yellow reduced-price sticker to it.”
Cid also recommended shopping for Walmart store brands to save even more money.
“When shopping for groceries, I buy a lot of Walmart’s Great Value brands,” she said. “If you stick with their brand, you’ll save money and be quite surprised at the quality of what they offer. Shop Walmart’s Equate brand of health products for big discounts on medicine and beauty items like razors and face wash. Equate brand is as much at 50% cheaper than the big name brands.”
Another smart move is to shop online at Walmart and make targeted lists, according to Destiny Chatman, PR coordinator at TopCashback.com. This helps to minimize unplanned purchases.
“When you enter a store, you’re often tempted by enticing displays that can distract you from your shopping list, leading to overspending,” Chatman told GOBankingRates. “Shopping online reduces these distractions and helps you stay focused on what you really need.”
While online shopping might involve shipping fees, “you can counteract this by bundling your orders,” Chatman added. “By purchasing larger quantities of essentials, you can shop less frequently and save more money in the long run.”
