7 Groceries That Are Cheaper at Target Than Trader Joe’s

When you hear the names Trader Joe’s and Target, you naturally assume one of them is the better place to shop for food.

But not so fast! Target is upping their grocery game, and they have some of the best deals in the biz – many of them better than Trader Joe’s. 

Here are the grocery items that are cheaper at Target than they are at Trader Joe’s.

If you’re looking for the best price on milk, head to Target. Their Good & Gather Vitamin D Whole Milk is a steal at $3.99 for a gallon.

Compare that to Trader Joe’s Organic Whole Milk from Grass Fed Cows at $4.99 for just a half gallon, and you’re saving big at Target. Sure, the Trader Joe’s option is organic, but if that’s not a deal-breaker for you, Target’s price is hard to beat.

Need to stock up on sandwich bread? Target’s Market Pantry White Sandwich Bread is just $1.49 for a 20-ounce loaf.

Meanwhile, Trader Joe’s White Sliced Bread will set you back $1.99 for a 22-ounce loaf. While you get a couple more ounces at Trader Joe’s, the price difference is still significant enough to make Target the budget-friendly choice.

Eggs are a staple in many households, and Target’s prices are unbeatable. Their Good & Gather Cage-Free Large White Fresh Grade A Eggs are $3.39 for 18 eggs.

Compared to Trader Joe’s Pasture Raised Large Brown Eggs, which are $4.99 for just a dozen. Even accounting for the difference in farming methods, Target’s price per egg is significantly lower.

For all of your salad needs, Target’s Good & Gather Shredded Iceberg Lettuce is $2.19 for 8 ounces. Trader Joe’s Organic Baby Lettuce Mix is $2.49 for 5 ounces.

While the varieties differ slightly, Target gives you more lettuce bang for your buck. Summer of health, here you come!

Cheese lovers, take note: Target’s Tillamook Sharp Cheddar Cheese Block is $3.79 for 8 ounces. At Trader Joe’s, you’ll pay $4.99 for the same amount of their Everything but the Bagel Cheddar Cheese.

While Trader Joe’s option has added flavor, if you’re after plain cheddar, Target’s price is much more palatable.

If rice is a staple in your pantry, Target’s Good & Gather Enriched Long Grain White Rice is just $1.99 for 32 ounces.

Trader Joe’s Jasmine Rice from Thailand is $3.29 for 3 pounds (48 ounces). Even though you get more at Trader Joe’s, Target’s price per ounce is still lower.

For cooking essentials like olive oil, Target again takes the lead. Their Good & Gather Extra Virgin Olive Oil is $6.99 for 16.9 ounces. Trader Joe’s Imported Olive Oil is $10.99 for 33.8 ounces. While Trader Joe’s bottle is larger, Target’s price per ounce is still lower.

While both stores offer great grocery deals, there are some items that are a better deal at Target. For our money, we like to visit both if we have the time – stock up on basics at Target and hit Trader Joe’s for the more unique items.

Of course, it’s worth noting that prices and availability vary by location, so make sure to check with your local stores first! And although Trader Joe’s rarely, if ever, discounts anything, make sure to check Target’s app and website for their weekly deals.
