Determining if the stock market is open on Easter is easy: Easter always falls on a Sunday, so the stock market will be closed as usual. That doesn’t mean the Easter holidays won’t impact the stock market’s hours, though.

Read on to learn how Easter and other holidays affect stock market hours.

Stock Market Hours for Easter 2023

The stock market will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 9, just like any other Sunday. In terms of changes to normal operating hours for investors, the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and the bond market will also be closed on Good Friday. The bond markets will close early, at 2 p.m., the day before Good Friday.

The stock market closes on most federal holidays. It might also close following an event of national importance, such as the death of a president. If a federal holiday falls on a weekend, the stock market will close on the nearest weekday before or after the weekend. Here’s the rule of thumb:

  • If a holiday falls on Saturday, the stock market will close on the Friday before.
  • If a holiday falls on Sunday, the stock market will close the following Monday.

That rule doesn’t always apply, however — including around the Easter holiday.

What Holidays Are the Stock Markets Closed in 2023?

According to the usual weekend holiday rule, the stock market would normally close the following Monday if a holiday is on a Sunday. But Easter is an exception: The markets will reopen for business on Monday, April 10.

Here’s a list of the ten holidays the stock market observes in 2023:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Banks and credit unions follow a similar holiday schedule to that of the stock market. However, banks will close on two days when the stock market doesn’t: Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Veterans Day. The stock market closes on Good Friday, but banking institutions will be open that day.
