Fall is right around the corner, so if you need to update your wardrobe or get new patio furniture, now’s a good time to make your shopping list. But you might want to wait until the actual season to go shopping since you’re more likely to save money on these items by getting them once summer ends.

Here are some fall essentials that are surprisingly cheapest to get during this season — and some tips on saving more when shopping.

Pre-Winter Clothing

“When fall arrives, it’s not just pumpkin spice that makes a return; everyone’s favorite sweaters and boots also start to make an appearance in stores,” said Destiny Chatman, consumer expert at TopCashback.com. “Pre-winter clothing sales hit an all-time high as fall begins, with everything from boots, scarves and hats becoming exponentially cheaper in preparation for cooler weather.”

So, when exactly should you go shopping for these things?

“The best time to get your cold weather gear is from the end of October to November, as prices will rise due to demand once the winter season starts,” Chatman said. “In November, Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales can get you up to 50% off UGG Women’s Classic Short II Boots.”

Warm-Weather Clothing

If you live somewhere that’s warm year-round or if you simply want to prepare in advance, you can find some cheap warm-weather clothing in the fall, too.

“[Fall’s] a great time to save on next summer’s essentials like clothing and beachwear,” said Michael Hershfield, CEO and founder of smart savings platform Accrue Savings.

You might not end up wearing your new swimwear outside, but who says you can’t go to an indoor pool or hot tub?

Transitional Layers

Fall is also a great time to stock up on those transitional layers.

“Think items that complement both your summer wardrobe and your winter wardrobe, like denim, sneakers or knits you can dress down when it’s hot and layer up when it’s chilly,” said Bella Gerard, shopping and trend advisor at Rakuten.

“Historically, retailers like J.Crew, Madewell, Michael Kors and Mango (and many of the major department stores) will announce massive sales towards the end of the season, where you can save big on a variety of essentials,” she said.

Home Goods

Home goods — for the indoors and out — can also be surprisingly cheap in the fall.

“For the home, the fall season is usually a prime time to find deals on patio furniture, as retailers look to clear out their inventory with the colder months ahead,” Gerard said. “Whether you’re looking for a new dining set, comfy lounge chairs or a chic umbrella, stores like Lowe’s and Ashley Furniture are bound to offer a wide variety of stylish pieces at a reduced price.”

Even if it gets chilly in your area, you can always cozy up on your new couch or chair with a cup of hot cocoa and a throw blanket.

Budget Trip

If you want to travel but would rather avoid the summer, why not book a budget-friendly trip in the fall?

“As seasonal travel slows down, fall is a prime opportunity to consider booking that much-anticipated getaway,” Hershfield said. “The off-peak season often brings reduced hotel and flight prices, making it the perfect time to travel on a budget.”

Shopping Savings Tips

Looking to save more money when shopping? Here are some expert tips:

  • Look for sales. This could include holiday sales like Labor Day, Columbus Day and back-to-school sales. It can also include end-of-season sales at major retailers and online.
  • Buy things in bulk. “If shopping for back-to-school supplies, consider buying in bulk for the rest of the school year,” Chatman said.
  • Don’t get pressured by social media. “Social media trends can cause pressure to buy the newest items and fear of missing out when making purchasing decisions, especially for Gen Z shoppers who spend more time online,” Hershfield said. “Remember, staying within your budget is paramount.”
  • Use cash back platforms or apps. “Whether you’re shopping online or in store, I always recommend utilizing a shopping platform like Rakuten that allows you to earn cash back on all your purchases,” Gerard said.
  • Compare prices. Check out prices for the things you want across different retailers to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
  • Stack deals. While shopping the major sales, look for ways to stack other deals — like promotions and cash back rewards — to save even more.
