As legendary department store Macy’s enters its 167th year in business, the retailer has struggled with internal accounting discrepancies, declining sales, and attempts to reinvent the brand. RetailDive.com reported that activist shareholders want Macy’s to pull back on capital investments and close its Bloomingdale’s stores while adopting a business model closer to Dillard’s.
During its earnings call in late 2024, Macy’s announced it would be closing 65 locations within the fiscal year and, by February 2026, roughly 150 locations will shutter, according to USA Today. The retailer will focus on elevating the customer experience in its remaining stores. As part of its revitalization, Macy’s has increased staff in the handbag and shoe departments of 100 of its remaining stores, according to Retail Dive.
