In early January, Kohl’s announced big changes coming this year. The company plans to close its San Bernardino e-commerce fulfillment center in May and close 27 underperforming stores by April. Most store closures are in California, but they do spread across 15 states.
With those closures, consumers may be looking for alternative retailers where they can shop and save money.
5 Things You Must Do When Your Savings Reach $50,000
If your local Kohl’s store is closing, here are some expert-recommended shopping alternatives to consider.
Macy’s
Macy’s is a major department store that sells a variety of clothing, home goods, accessories and more, so consider shopping there as an alternative.
“Macy’s has its own private label brands that are popular like I.N.C. and Style & Co. clothes, which are similar to Kohl’s store brands like Sonoma and Apt. 9, as well as comparable home and lifestyle brands,” said Melissa Cid, consumer savings expert for MySavings.com. “Macy’s also has great clearance sales both in-store and online that won’t have you missing Kohl’s, including higher-end brands up to 85% off.”
According to Trae Bodge, smart shopping expert at TrueTrae, the store is comparable in merchandise, but its prices can be higher. “Macy’s has a broad range of merchandise, like Kohl’s, but in my experience, the prices are higher, and the brands Macy’s carries tend to be higher end,” Bodge said.
The retailer also has a rewards program that earns store cash, similar to Kohl’s Cash, which Bodge recommended signing up for to save money.
Target
Target is another retailer that carries a range of products similar to Kohl’s.
“Similar to Kohl’s, Target carries affordable, stylish merchandise across a broad range of categories, including apparel, footwear, items for the home, electronics, gifts and fitness items, like apparel and small equipment,” Bodge said. “Target also has a generous loyalty program, regular sales and additional benefits for shoppers, like their store cards.”
Bodge noted that the annual percentage rates on the store’s Circle credit card are high, so you should sign up only if you can pay off the card in full each month. As an alternative, opt for Target’s debit card to earn points.
Walmart
Walmart is known for its low prices. It carries similar products to Kohl’s, and you can get your groceries there as well.
However, all consumers may not benefit from its loyalty programs. “Walmart also has a loyalty program, but it’s exclusive to Walmart +, Walmart’s paid membership program, making those benefits less accessible to shoppers on a strict budget,” Bodge said.
JCPenney
JCPenny has left malls across the country, but for those who still have one nearby, it carries similar items at affordable prices.
“JCPenney features a similar mix of clothing, home décor and accessories to Kohl’s, but the brands that each retailer tend to be different,” Bodge said. “JCPenney also has a loyalty program with robust benefits, and the retailer has frequent sale events.”
