As inflation persists and sticker prices remain stubbornly steadfast, retirees on a budget may be looking to score a deal on a new crossover or SUV.

Thankfully, some models still offer an attractive value proposition for those retirees hoping to pick up a brand new ride from a nearby showroom. Following is a list of some highly-rated 2025 selections that zero in on safety, efficiency and style while keeping sticker shock to a minimum.

In contrast, here are crossovers retirees should avoid.

Hyundai Venue

  • Base price: $19,900

According to iSeeCars, the 2025 Hyundai Venue stands out from the rest of the pack in more ways than one, being rated first in terms of the site’s most affordable compact SUVs as well as in the category of the most affordable five-seater SUVs.

Budget-friendly, spacious and affordable at an MSRP of under $20,000 (at a starting MSRP of just $19,900), it’s hard to go wrong with this model from Hyundai. It’s also very cheap on gas and is offered in two basic colors: black and grey.

Nissan Kicks

  • Base price: $21,830

While Nissan may be making headlines lately following failed merger talks with fellow automaker Honda, that hasn’t kept it from producing an affordable crossover for those enjoying their golden years.

The 2025 Nissan Kicks was scored a commendable 9.0 by U.S. News & World Report, with highlights being it’s spacious and comfortable cabin, extensive suite of driver-assistance features and superb fuel economy (27 to 28 mpg city or 34 to 35 mpg highway).

Kicking off at a comparatively low standard MSRP of $21,830, this model won’t necessarily break the bank, either.

Chevrolet Trax

  • Base price: $20,400

iSeeCars was quick to gesture toward the 2025 Chevrolet Trax as another value-priced crossover that seniors should consider test driving. It ranked No. 1 in the family subcompact SUV category, largely on the merits of its affordability and safety score (ranking a perfect 10/10 in the latter metric).

An aerodynamic design, good fuel economy (28 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, per U.S. News & World Report) and a starting price of $20,400 all point to an excellent purchase, if Chevys are your thing.

Mazda CX-5

  • Base price: $28,570

Racking up a rather impressive 9.3 score from U.S. News & World Report, the 2025 Mazda CX-5 blends a modernized exterior with a luxurious cabin look — “one of the nicest cabins in the segment,” per the outlet — to attract the eye of passersby. While that cabin may not be as roomy as others, nor the cargo space, a peppy engine and comfortable ride offer upsides that may appeal to retirees looking for a sportier crossover.

The price tag isn’t too alarming, either: Coming in at $28,570 starting, the Mazda CX-5 isn’t wildly more expensive than the other options listed. Superior handling and decent gas mileage (26 mpg city and 31 mpg highway) make this a standout selection overall.
