If you’re worried about tariff-induced shortages, you’re not alone. Anticipating dwindling stock in stores, shoppers are loading up their carts with way more than usual. With tariff concerns creating uncertainty about future prices and availability, smart shoppers are flocking to Costco.
We talked to Costco members about what they’re prioritizing, and the patterns are pretty clear. Here’s what’s likely flying off the shelves as people prepare for whatever trade policy changes might come next.
Major Appliances
Jessica G., a regular Costco shopper, wasn’t planning to replace her washing machine until next year, but she recently changed her mind. “You’re actually asking me at the perfect time, because I bought the LG set at Costco last month,” she shared. “I don’t know … I’m just a little freaked out by what might be coming.”
Refrigerators, washers, dryers and dishwashers are an everyday great deal at Costco, so it makes sense this is what shoppers are stocking up on.
Electronics and Gaming Systems
The electronics section tells a similar story. One member told us she’s loading up in anticipation of the shortages. “I bought extra phone chargers, cables and even grabbed that Nintendo Switch for my kids’ birthdays,” she shared.
Costco’s excellent return policy means shoppers can have the confidence to make these bigger purchases now rather than wait and potentially pay more later.
Tires and Automotive Supplies
Costco’s tire centers are busier than usual with members buying tires before they actually need them. “I had maybe 10,000 miles left on my current tires, but I went ahead and bought a new set,” Jessica said. “I’ll just store them until I need them and then head back to Costco to get them installed for free.”
The automotive section is also expected to see action, with motor oil, car batteries and other supplies moving as people think about future vehicle maintenance costs.
Coffee and Specialty Beverages
The coffee aisle remains a hotspot, with shoppers stocking up on Kirkland Signature Colombian coffee and imported varieties.
Costco’s bulk coffee options, including organic and fair-trade varieties, are popular with coffee lovers preparing for potentially higher prices on imported beans.
Mattresses and Bedroom Furniture
Costco’s mattress section is seeing unexpected activity. “We weren’t planning to replace our guest room mattress until we moved, but the Sealy one was such a good deal if furniture prices go up,” Jessica said.
The warehouse’s furniture selection, from bedroom sets to office chairs, is a great place for shoppers thinking about future home needs.
Vacuum Cleaners and Home Appliances
Costco shoppers are looking into smaller appliances too. Dyson vacuums, KitchenAid mixers and Ninja blenders could be popular buys as members might consider replacing items they might need in the coming year or two.
“I grabbed that Shark vacuum I’d been eyeing for a few months,” Jessica said. “I mean, I’m just nervous.”
