With drivers in some parts of the United States paying more than $5 a gallon for gas, it’s putting a strain on some family budgets.

For senior drivers on fixed incomes, it can be especially difficult to pay those higher prices at the pump. One solution, of course, is to buy another vehicle that gets better fuel efficiency.

With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the best cars for retirees who want to cut gas costs now, based on economic and market intelligence from CarGurus.

2026 Toyota Prius

With a starting price around $28,000, the 2026 Prius delivers up to an estimated 57 combined mpg and leads the list for fuel efficiency, making it the go-to choice for retirees prioritizing fewer fuel stops and maximum savings

“The Prius is the ‘OG’ of hybrids and it’s earned its reputation for affordability and dependability,” said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org.

2026 Ford Maverick Hybrid

Check out the 2026 Maverick if you’re a retiree who doesn’t want to give up utility to save on gas. With a starting price around $28,000, the Maverick XL has a 2.5L hybrid engine with an estimated 38 combined mpg.

The sleek exterior has 17-inch steel wheels with Sparkle Silver covers and a FLEXBED storage system.

2022 Honda Insight

The experts at CarGurus like the 2022 Insight as a good choice for senior drivers. First, it offers excellent fuel economy with upwards of 50 mpg, per Car and Driver. In addition, the 2022 Insight provides a familiar, easy-to-drive sedan format with practical cargo space, thanks to its Civic-based design.

2021 Subaru Forester

According to Musson, if you’re looking for a traditional gas-powered vehicle that’s still efficient, check out the Subaru Forester. Specifically, she likes the efficiency and price of the 2021 Forester, along with the AWD and reliability aspects of that year.

You should be able to find a 2021 Forester for around $21,000, based on information from Kelley Blue Book. When it comes to fuel efficiency, expect around 26 to 29 combined mpg.
