Research Methodology
To discover the Best Banks by state, GOBankingRates analyzed the top institutions (excluding online banks and neobanks) by state branch locations. To determine rankings, GOBankingRates looked at the following factors: (1) total assets as sourced from the FDIC; (2) checking product minimum deposit; (3) monthly checking fee ratio (percentage of the minimum to avoid fees compared to the monthly fee itself); (4) savings product minimum deposit; (5) savings product APY; (6) Bauer rating (out of 5 stars); (7) products/services offered (auto loans, mortgage loans, credit cards, investment services and insurance); and (8) the average mobile app rating between the Google Play (Android) and Apple stores. All factors were then scored and combined, with the lowest score being the best. Factors (1), (2) and (4) were weighed 0.5 times, factor (5) was weighed 2.5 times and factor (7) was weighed 1.5 times. All products and offerings had to be available as of Nov. 8, 2024, to be considered. Rates are subject to change; unless otherwise noted, rates are updated periodically. All other information on accounts is accurate as of Aug. 28, 2025.
To qualify as one of the Best Banks in the state, the institution needed at least five branch locations in the respective state, with some exceptions for larger and/or smaller states.
How To Choose the Right Bank in Montana
Keep the following considerations in mind when choosing the best Montana bank for you:
- Community vs. regional vs. national: Community banks like Stockman Bank can offer more personalized service because they often have more local branches. However, large banks, like U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo, have a larger choice of accounts with extra bells and whistles. In addition, they often have big ATM networks that give you free access to your cash no matter where you are.
- Account selection: Having a wide range of accounts isn’t useful if they don’t offer the features you need — like competitive yields, unlimited check writing, automatic savings transfers or low minimums to earn interest.
- Rewards and promotions: Rewards programs help you make the most of your accounts, whether they get you cash back on debit purchases, discounts on loans or other perks.
- Loan products: The right loan can help you achieve your financial goals. Borrowing from the same bank where you have your checking and savings accounts helps make managing your accounts easier, and it could earn you relationship rewards.
- Fees: Most banks have some fees, but they should give you easy ways to waive them. Low or no minimum balance requirements, free out-of-network ATM use and no overdraft fees help you hold onto more of your money.
- Digital platforms: Full-featured online and mobile apps give you full control over your money when you can’t or don’t want to bank in person. If you use a digital wallet, make sure your bank supports it.
- Community involvement: Banks are integral to communities’ vitality. Your bank should support your community with a broad selection of home and business loans, as well as sponsorship of local civic and charitable organizations.
Conclusion
You have a choice between many banks and credit unions in Montana, which can make it difficult to settle on the best one for your needs. Keep your financial priorities in mind as you explore GOBankingRates’ picks for top banks in Montana, then fill out an application for the one you like best.
