Best Checking Account Interest Rates in Every State

Make your money work for you by finding the best APY available.

Because you can access your money as much as you want with a checking account whether through writing checks or visiting the ATM — most financial institutions limit the amount of interest they’ll pay on these types of accounts. And some don’t pay any interest at all. As of Oct. 13, 2017, the average interest-bearing checking account paid just 0.04% APY, according to the FDIC.

To help you find for the highest rates, GOBankingRates researched the highest interest checking account rates in every state. Keep in mind that sometimes these rates come with special requirements. For instance, if the rate is really high, it might apply only to a portion of your balance. If you’re looking to open a checking account, review the chart to find the best checking account rates available in your state — and don’t forget to also take advantage of checking account bonuses and promotions.

Rates for interest checking vary significantly across the country. You’ll find the highest rates in Ohio, Wisconsin and Washington.

Landmark Credit Union Wisconsin offers a high, 7.50% APY on balances up to $500 if you agree to receive e-statements and sign up for direct deposit. Washington’s Inspirus Credit Union offers 7.00% APY on balances up to $500 for its ADDvantage Checking Account — to get that rate you’ll need at least $50 to open the account and you have to set up direct deposit or payroll deduction contributions.

Landmark and Inspirus’s checking account rates are very high, but they don’t hold a candle to the highest checking APY in the country. Based in Ohio, Bridge Credit Union’s Diamond Dividend Checking definitely qualifies as a high-yield checking account — it offers a whopping, 10.00% APY. As you might expect, there are a lot of requirements to qualify for that rate. You need to use your debit card 35 times per month and you have to enroll for electronic statements and bill pay — you must use your bill pay account at least once every 60 days. Additionally, you must set up direct deposits of at least $1,000 per month.

On the other end of the spectrum, you won’t earn much money on your checking accounts in Delaware, North Dakota or Montana. Delaware’s Artisan Bank ranks top in the state but only pays only 0.75% APY on its Interest Rewards Checking account, which is still leagues ahead of the national average. You can qualify for that rate by making 12 Visa check card transactions per month, enrolling in online banking, signing up for e-statements and posting a direct deposit to the account each cycle.

In North Dakota, the State Bank of Bottineau pays the highest rate, which is only 0.25% APY on its Super Now Checking account. Montana comes in with the lowest rate across the country — the First Security Bank’s Easy Interest Checking account pays the most interest in the state on a checking account, which is a very low, 0.50% APY.
