ChatGPT from OpenAI and Claude from Anthropic are battling for supremacy in the rapidly developing field of large language models or LLMs. Also referred to as artificial intelligence (AI) bots, users can get quick, convincing answers to nearly any query, including opinions on the latest hot stocks.

While relying on AI to invest isn’t financially prudent, there are some reasons that boomers might want to consider Claude over ChatGPT when it comes to these types of questions.

Claude Isn’t Overly Confident

Claude is trained somewhat differently from ChatGPT, using what’s known as “Constitutional AI.” As described by its creator, Anthropic, this model is designed to have moral and ethical guardrails that reduce the chance that it will endorse potentially harmful behavior. Making risky stock market bets can fall into this category.

One of the complaints about ChatGPT and indeed about AI in general, is that it is too “cheerful” and “confident,” making bold claims without tempering how they can be taken by its audience. While not always successful, Claude attempts to avoid those scenarios. In fact, the large language model has been trained to actually push back on risky prompts, per Anthropic.

Claude Emphasizes Safety

Analysts at IBM suggested that Claude’s design emphasizes safety guidelines, particularly regarding uncertain or unpredictable topics like the stock market. This doesn’t mean that Claude will necessarily avoid providing answers about hot stocks, but when it does, they will likely be couched in language discussing risks and limitations rather than appearing as unfiltered recommendations.

Claude May Probe Deeper

In the most recent Claude documentation from Anthropic, the latest versions of the model are designed to ask “more clarifying questions,” especially regarding topics like financial advice. If you ask Claude about investing in Nvidia stock, for example, the LLM is likely to request more data from you to help it paint a more accurate and complete picture.

An evaluation of ChatGPT’s model by the Emerging Investigators Journal showed that ChatGPT tended to respond directly with generic advice, rather than probing for more information first.

Caveats

AI models are sounding more and more “realistic” every day. But it’s important to understand that LLMs don’t actually “think.” Rather, they provide answers based on language patterns. They cannot provide real-world financial advice. As Philipp Winder at the Institute of Behavioral Science and Technology pointed out: “this veneer of trust can mask real financial risks.” For that reason, it’s essential that you either do your own research or consult with a fiduciary financial advisor before risking real capital.
