Year in Review: Fortune 500 Companies That Added the Most New Jobs in 2020

Job growth has been in a downward trajectory over recent months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as an economic recovery that had picked up over the summer is losing momentum going into the fall amid rising coronaviruses cases. Of the 638,000 jobs that were added in the U.S. in October, dominant sectors included leisure and hospitality, retail trade, healthcare and social assistance, as well as professional and business services.
Among Fortune 500 companies, many have added significant numbers of jobs in 2020, compared to 2019. Technology companies, couriers like FedEx and UPS, and discount retailers are among those hiring the most this year. In perhaps another notable sign of the times, a manufacturer of plastic packaging and protective medical solutions had the highest percentage growth year over year, landing at No. 5 on this list.

Amazon announced in March that it would add 100,000 full- and part-time positions in its fulfillment centers and delivery network to meet unprecedented demand in online shopping, and invited those who had lost jobs in areas like hospitality and restaurants to apply. More recent statements have indicated additional surges in hiring, focusing not just on its hourly workforce, but with heavy investment in corporate and tech positions as its cloud computing, devices and entertainment divisions continue to thrive.

Methodology: To find the Fortune 500 companies that have added the most new jobs this year, GOBankingRates first looked at all 288 2020 Fortune 500 companies with positive growth in jobs. Then, using 2020 and 2019 Fortune 500 data, GOBankingRates found the (1) total number of employees each company has in 2020, (2) the total number of employees each company had in 2019, (3) the total number of new jobs added between 2019 and 2020, and (4) the percent by which the company’s total employee base has grown. Companies were then ranked on factor (3). Information on each company’s 2020 revenue, revenue percent change between 2019 and 2020, 2020 profits, percent change in profits between 2019 and 2020, March 31, 2020, market value, and change in Fortune 500 rank between 2019 and 2020 were provided as supplemental information. All data was collected on and up to date as of Oct. 12, 2020.
