If you’re in the market for an electric vehicle (EV) and want to make the most of your money, Ford is sweetening the deal for consumers by offering a free charging unit for a limited time. According to Car and Driver and Reuters, from now until Jan. 2, 2025, Ford will give away complimentary home chargers, including installation, with the purchase or lease of a new F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E or E-Transit cargo van. Here’s everything you need to know.

Also here are some price changes Ford made to its EV lineup in 2024.

Peace of Mind and Convenience

Many people with an EV have trouble charging, so Ford is trying to help eliminate that issue. The average home charger cost varies depending on the type of EV, but owners can expect to spend around $799 to $1,999, according to Qmerit — and Ford is picking up that tab.

According to a recent Ford survey conducted by Mercury Analytics in September, almost 90% of car shoppers would be more inclined to buy an EV if they could charge at home. To help persuade customers to go with an EV, Ford CEO Jim Farley wants to make charging seamless. In a recent LinkedIn post, he wrote that he wants to save consumers money and take the guesswork out of where to buy a home charger and who to call to install it. In response to this, he said the company is offering this generous incentive.

In the same post, Farley announced the Ford Power Promise, which includes the BlueOval Charge Network, which searches for nearby charging stations, improved battery quality and around-the-clock support with free roadside assistance.

You Can Save by Charging at Home

With the fluctuating high cost of gas, filling up at the pump will cost you every week. But charging at home can be budget-friendly over time. According to EnergySage, the average cost is $0.05 per mile to charge from home compared to 13 cents per mile for a gas car. However, prices range based on where you live, your battery and your electrical source. On average, EV owners should expect to spend $56 monthly to charge only at home or roughly $674 a year.

EV Sales Are Down

It’s no secret that EV sales are down and carmakers are scrambling to boost sales. The Ford Model e lost $1.1 billion in Q2 of this year and $2.5 billion in the first half of the year. According to a recent earnings report, the company expects to lose $5 billion to $5.5 billion for the entire year.

John Lawler, the vice chair and chief financial officer for Ford, addressed the situation in an earnings call and stated the focus on cost reductions for materials, better batteries and lower engineering saved $400 million in loss and hopes to have a different outlook profit-wise for next year.

But it’s not just Ford that is losing money on EVs. Tesla’s Model Y is still the top-selling car in California, but sales have decreased 8.5% from last year, according to the California New Car Dealers Association.

With year-end discounts and Ford’s incentive to push their EV models, now might be the time to buy or lease if you need a new car and want the best value for your money.
