“MSRP” stands for “manufacturer’s suggested retail price.” Naturally, auto manufacturers determine a car’s MSRP, not dealerships or salespeople. That means the base price is the same no matter where you buy a new vehicle, but your state and even county can mean the difference between hundreds or even thousands of dollars that you spend or money saved on the exact same vehicle.

That’s because the state auto sales tax, sometimes different from the general sales tax rate, adds more than 8% of the purchase price to the tally — or nothing at all or something in between.

Then there are registration fees, license plate fees and title fees, with some states charging for those services and others giving some away for free.

To showcase just how much the price of a new car can vary depending on where you live, GOBankingRates used the 2024 Toyota Corolla as the baseline vehicle MSRP. After all, it’s the bestselling car of all time, topping 50 million units sold in 2021.

The 2024 Corolla’s starting MSRP is $22,050.

The analysis used data from PolicyGenius to include state-by-state auto tax rates and Insurify data to factor in registration, license plate and title fees for all 50 states to show the true price you’ll pay depending on where you live. Some states charge a flat rate, but in others, there’s a price range based on factors like the vehicle’s weight and value.
