When it comes to reliability, your average sports car probably doesn’t come to mind. Sport utility vehicles, better known as SUVs, are generally more rugged and dependable than other types of vehicles. But that doesn’t mean every SUV will outperform other cars on the road.
Here are 10 SUVs in 2024 that will probably outlast your average sports car.
How Long Do Cars Last?
According to Progressive, a conventional car can last for 200,000 miles, while some well-maintained models can reach 300,000 or more miles in total. The average passenger car lasts around 12 years in the U.S.
Generally, if you stick to the manufacturer’s service schedule, a modern car from a reliable brand should last 200,000 miles or more, Consumer Reports said.
“Much depends on the specific make and model of the vehicle,” said Joe Veselak, an automotive tester at Consumer Reports. “There are used vehicles, such as the Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner, and Lexus GX, with 160,000 miles or more that are still selling for a lot of money because they’re known for reliability and longevity.”

If you’re looking for a reliable SUV, U.S. News & World Report put together a list of 2024 models using the J.D. Power Quality and Dependability score. This score is based on owner feedback in the first 90 days of ownership, where a score of 91-100 is Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair or below average.

How To Keep Your Car on the Road as Long as Possible
To keep your car on the road, Consumer Reports recommends avoiding the first year of a new model. Wait until the second or third year for the manufacturer to work out any problems and for enough data on the model’s reliability.
If you’re buying a used car, do some research on that specific model to find out if there are any existing problems. Look at the vehicle’s maintenance records to see if it’s been properly cared for. Consumer Reports also recommends having it inspected by a mechanic before purchasing.
After purchase, make sure to drive the car regularly, keep the car clean and well-maintained and have the car inspected if you notice any issues.
