Feeding a family dinner for under $15 might seem like an impossible task, but it can be done. All you need are a few simple recipes and a trip to Aldi, where shoppers can save money on all the necessary ingredients.
For this piece, GOBankingRates pulled classic, universally beloved dinners and sourced the key ingredients, and their prices, necessary to make each meal. If your budget is limited to $15, consider putting that money toward making these delicious and cheap dinners.
Spaghetti and Garlic Toast
- Cost of ingredients: $9.32
You can never go wrong with spaghetti for dinner, especially when most of the ingredients plus a side dish cost less than $10 at Aldi.Â
Your must-haves include one pound of Simply Nature organic spaghetti ($2.19) and a jar of Reggano meat sauce ($1.85). Once the pasta has cooked, top with Reggano grated parmesan cheese ($3.19) and serve with a side of Mama Cozzi’s garlic Texas toast ($2.45 for an eight-count box).
Hot Dogs
- Cost of ingredients: $13.58
Chances are pretty good you have most of the ingredients necessary to make hot dogs already in your pantry at home. If you don’t and need to buy all-new everything, Aldi makes it affordable.Â
Fill your shopping cart with Parkview uncured beef franks ($3.55 for eight servings), L’Oven Fresh hot dog buns ($1.55 for eight) and condiments by way of Burman’s ketchup ($2.35), Burman’s yellow mustard ($1.05) and Great Gherkins dill relish ($1.89). It might even be possible to shave a few dollars off the total when factoring in the household’s favorite condiments.
For a healthy side, swap out the typical potato chips for a 3-pound bag of mandarin oranges ($3.95).Â
Bean and Cheese Burritos
- Cost of ingredients: $12.47
Even the pickiest eaters love bean and cheese burritos. These burritos are a win-win for your cooking prep time and overall cost.Â
Pick up Casa Mamita refried beans ($1.09), one pound of Happy Farms Monterey Jack shredded cheese ($3.95) and Pueblo Lindo flour tortillas ($2.15 for a 10-count bag). White onions are 38 cents per pound (optional for the picky eaters, but a flavorful must for the adults!).Â
Pair with Clancy’s tortilla chips ($1.65) and Casa Mamita chunky salsa ($2.75) since every burrito deserves a chips and salsa pairing.Â
Chicken Quesadillas
- Cost of ingredients: $14.15
You can make chicken quesadillas for under $15 if you crunch the numbers carefully during your Aldi shopping run.Â
To keep costs low, we picked Kirkwood thin sliced chicken breasts ($5.59), Happy Farms Oaxaca shredded cheese ($1.75) and the Pueblo Lindo flour tortillas ($2.15) from our bean and cheese burrito dinner idea. Casa Mamita mild chunky salsa ($2.75) and Friendly Farms sour cream ($2.05) make up the two dipping options.
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
- Cost of ingredients: $12.43
While you can find even cheaper ingredients sold at Aldi to make grilled cheese, we splurged a little to ensure extra delicious sandwiches.
Our top picks included Specially Selected’s sliced sourdough round ($3.65), Countryside Creamery’s pure Irish butter ($4.09) and a one-pound sharp cheddar cheese block from Happy Farms ($4.69).Â
Pizza and Salad
- Cost of ingredients: $11.98
Resist the temptation to order out pizza at the end of the busy week and keep Mama Cozzi’s 16″ pepperoni pizza on standby in the freezer instead.Â
These extra-large pizzas are big enough to ensure everyone gets a few slices. A salad kit from Little Salad Bar — we picked the Southwest salad blend — makes the perfect side for staying within the $15 spending limit.Â
