- After the holiday shopping season has died down, retailers entice shoppers back into their stores with sales.
- As you’re shopping, still be mindful of shopping loopholes you can find, like hassle-free return policies and lifetime warranties.
- January sales have a long history — some started more than 100 years ago.
If you’re ready to embrace change in 2019, national and online retailers are making it possible to do so on the cheap. January is the month of steep discounts on plenty of consumer products, so you can spruce up your home and get deals on things you need to help meet your New Year’s resolutions.
Bedding and Linens
January is synonymous with “white sales.” Since John Wanamaker first did it in his store over a century ago, department stores have followed a sales legacy of slashing prices on linens and bedding in January.
To freshen up your home in the new year, you’ll find deep discounts on sheets, duvet covers, shams, comforters, bath towels and pillows at Pottery Barn, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, JCPenney and Macy’s. Online retailers like Hayneedle, The Company Store and Joss & Main are even in on the tradition and are offering great deals.
Carpeting and Flooring
The industry’s slow season is after the holidays, so you’ll likely find the best deals to update your home’s floors. At Lumber Liquidators, you can get several types of flooring for less than $1 per square foot. Empire Today is offering homeowners $150 off carpet and $200 off laminates through Jan. 20.

The holidays signal blockbusters for video game sales. The most sought-after games are typically released later in the year to align with holiday shopping. Turns out, your (or your gamer’s) patience has paid off because many of 2018’s hottest video games are currently on sale.
Shoppers can score three of the most popular games of the 2018 holiday season for less: Amazon is currently selling “Red Dead Redemption 2” on PlayStation 4 for $59.88 or $54.86 for a used copy; “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” on Xbox One is available at Walmart for $43.28; and “Battlefield V” on Xbox One is available at Walmart for $29.83.
Gyms often offer their best sales in January, and this year is no exception: Many are primed and ready to offer you a great deal on your New Year’s resolution of getting fit in 2019.
For instance, Equinox — the luxury gym with locations from Los Angeles to London — wants to pay you to work out. Visit the gym eight times in your first 30 days of membership and you’ll get your initiation fees returned to you.
For those desiring a low-impact workout with a dash of mindfulness, Barre3 is a mix of ballet, Pilates and cardio that’ll strengthen your core and make you sweat. Join The January Challenge from Jan. 7 to Feb. 3, and for $29 you’ll get unlimited access to more than 500 online workouts that you can do in your own home while streaming from any electronic device.
The initiation fee is being waived for new 24 Hour Fitness members on select memberships, but you’ll have to pay the first and last months’ dues upfront. If you want to get fit as a family or with friends, it’s only $29.99 per month to add them to select membership plans.

Winter officially arrived a few weeks ago, but fashion retailers have their sights set on spring. Bulky winter parkas need to leave the sales floor in order to make room for the next season’s collection — and could be your answer for what to buy in January. Right now at L.L.Bean, winter wear for the whole family is up to 50 percent off. At The North Face, shoppers can score great deals on boots and jackets.

If you’re organized (and have the storage space), now’s the time to turn to national retailers like Target, Macy’s, Pier 1 and Kohl’s to buy next year’s Christmas decorations. You can buy everything from artificial Christmas trees to ornaments, lights and other seasonal home goods and start counting down the days till Dec. 25, 2019.
The city that never sleeps does come to a halt during one of the coldest months of the year. If you’re brave enough to face a New York City winter, you can score two-for-one show tickets during NYC Broadway Week from Jan. 21 to Feb. 10 to hit shows like “Aladdin,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Mean Girls.”
