Costco has a loyal following, and they know what they want. Like most retailers, the members-only warehouse club tends to cycle items in and out — or discontinue some products altogether.
This doesn’t sit well with customers who regularly have these items on their shopping lists. Given the sheer volume of products in a Costco store, it probably isn’t too hard to find some type of substitute, but that doesn’t mean it’s the same.
Saving money is the main reason Costco customers purchase a $60 annual gold star membership or a $120 annual executive membership. However, many people also develop a strong preference for certain Kirkland-brand items.
Therefore, it’s easy to understand why it can be simultaneously disappointing and frustrating to search their local warehouse for a certain item, only to find it’s not just temporarily out of stock. Costco superfans might begrudgingly move on from these items, but that doesn’t mean they’ll forget them.
If you’re a Costco shopper, it’s possible you can relate. Maybe you’ve developed a fondness for certain items, only to have them eventually disappear. You may have even forgotten some of these beloved products if they were pulled a while ago. Or, perhaps you haven’t yet realized some of your favorites are no longer on the Costco shelves.
Jeff Shenk, managing editor of Costco.97, has seen plenty of items come and go and wants some of them to make a comeback. Here’s a look at eight former Costco items he’s hoping make their way back into stores.
Del Destino Organic Fire Roasted Red Peppers
“These Del Destino Roasted Red Peppers are healthy and versatile to jazz up tons of recipes,” said Shenk.
He said this former Costco item was a beloved pantry staple at a notably low price.
“These peppers used to come in large, 42-ounce containers from Costco and cost under $10 a jar,” said Shenk. “Other stores like Walmart carry these same peppers for nearly $24, so fans wish Costco would bring back this bargain.”
Hebrew National Bagel Dogs
“Similar to ‘pigs in a blanket,’ Hebrew National Bagel Dogs was a great one-minute meal option found in Costco’s freezer section,” said Shenk. “With a package price close to $12, Costco members saved money on this snack because other retailers sell them for nearly $20 today.”
More than just a low-priced snack, people also really enjoyed these bagel dogs.
“Customers especially liked the soft, bagel dough pastry, which is different from other store-bought brands,” said Shenk.
Red’s Burritos
“A former hit at Costco, Red’s burritos, came in tons of flavors with the favorites being chipotle chicken and bean and cheese,” said Shenk.
Quick and easy to make, he said this was a popular lunch option among Costco members.
“Each Costco burrito saved $1 as compared to other grocery stores, which can add up during a freezer stock,” said Shenk.
Kirkland Signature Organic Greens Juice
“A staple product Costco-holics are missing is the Organic Greens Juice,” said Shenk. “This drink featured cucumber, apple, kale, lettuce, celery, lemon and mint, with each serving only containing 80 calories.”
He said Kirkland Signature customers loved this item because it was light and sugar-free.
“The green juice was offered in a pack of two 33-ounce bottles priced at just $7.99, capturing quite the deal compared to other green juice products that sell for $9.99-$19.99,” said Shenk. “Another plus is that this juice didn’t need to be refrigerated until after opening, so you could prevent excess fridge clutter.”
Take & Bake Pizzas
“If you didn’t want to wait for a hot fresh Costco food court pizza, another option was the Take & Bake Pizzas,” said Shenk. “These pies were easy to bring home and stick in the oven, perfect for busy weeknights at only $8.99 for a large, 18-inch pepperoni pizza.”
He said the Take & Bake pizzas did garner mixed reviews, which could have something to do with their disappearance.
“However, we — and a lot of other Costco members — would love to see these pizzas make a comeback,” said Shenk. “Especially since other store-bought ‘take and bake’ options cost anywhere from $12-$20.”
Kirkland Signature Ultra Shine Premium Dish Soap
“Kirkland Signature Ultra Shine Premium Dish Soap was a great option for Costco customers who wanted more eco-friendly, quality cleaning products that are gentle on skin without strong scents or dyes — at bargain prices,” said Shenk.
This product had a pleasantly light citrus scent, he said, and when compared with Dawn Dish Soap, the consistency and cleaning ability were excellent.
“Plus, the price of Kirkland’s soap was around $8 for 135 ounces, which is several dollars cheaper than $12-18 for the same size bottle of Dawn,” said Shenk.
Food Court Combo Pizza
“One of the most heavily missed Costco discontinued items is the Costco food court Combo pizza,” said Shenk. “Some customers only came into a Costco store to order this pizza, which had peppers, olives, mushrooms, onions and pepperoni as toppings.”
He said Costco still has pizza on the food court menu — $1.99 per slice or $9.95 per 18-inch pizza — but cheese and pepperoni are the only toppings to choose from. Consequently, he said die-hard Costco fans have started petitions(2) to bring this menu item back
“If you can’t recall the taste, the price may sway you to want this menu item back,” said Shenk. “For reference, a Domino’s Deluxe pizza, which has similar toppings, is $18 for only 14-inches.”
Kirkland Signature Disinfecting Wipes
“Kirkland Signature Disinfecting Wipes are missed by many, coming to fruition during the height of COVID-19, but later, discontinued completely,” said Shenk.
These disinfecting wipes were available in a fresh air or lemon scent.
“Each wipe was thick and did not leave behind white lint like Clorox or Lysol wipes,” said Shenk. “Customers liked the texture of these wipes for scrubbing and the fact that the price was around $9.99 for a four-pack, whereas competing brands sell for closer to $15.”
He said some Costco shoppers even noted that these Kirkland wipes were big enough to attach to a Swiffer.
“Costco members who love a clean home are begging for these bargain wipes to be restocked,” said Shenk.
Hopefully, Costco will grant their wish and get these wipes back on the shelves in the not-so-distant future.
