With new tariffs making their way into the headlines again, now might be a good time to think ahead, especially if you’re retired and living on a fixed income. Trade wars tend to drive up prices on everyday goods and some of the first items to be affected are the ones we rely on the most.

If you’re a Costco member, it might be smart to stock up now before price hikes or shortages hit. Here are a few items to grab on your next run.

Kirkland Signature Frozen Mixed Berries

  • Price: $13.59

Fresh produce is one of the first things to get more expensive when tariffs kick in. Items like berries, grapes and avocados are often imported, which means they could see price spikes. So make sure to stock up on frozen versions, which last longer and often come from the same sources.

The Kirkland Signature Frozen Mixed Berries Blend comes in a large resealable bag and has a mix of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries.

Kirkland Signature Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • Price: $25

Many cooking oils, like olive and avocado oil, are imported. If you like to cook at home and prefer not to pay double for the basics, you’ll want to grab an extra bottle or two now.

The two liter Kirkland Signature Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil only costs $25 and can last you weeks or even months, depending on how often you cook.

Kirkland Signature Premium Big Roll Paper Towels

  • Price: $23.99

While not always directly affected by tariffs, these everyday staples tend to disappear fast when people start panic-buying. It doesn’t hurt to pick up an extra pack to avoid a last-minute dash.

The Kirkland Signature Premium Big Roll Paper Towels comes with 12 individually wrapped rolls and only costs $23.99, which comes out to around $2 per roll.

Kirkland Signature Dark Roast Coffee

  • Price: $23.99

Most coffee beans and a lot of tea leaves are imported. If tariffs hit those countries, your morning routine could get a bit pricier. Costco sells large containers and bulk packs of both, which are easy to store and can last for months. The Kirkland Signature Colombian Coffee costs $23.99 and can last you a few months.

Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Laundry Detergent

  • Price: $19.99

Laundry detergent might not be the first thing that comes to mind during a trade war, but many of the ingredients used in cleaning products, like surfactants and fragrance compounds, are imported and subject to tariffs. Companies like Procter & Gamble (P&G), which owns Tide, are already warning that tariffs will lead to price hikes on their product, according to Reuters.

The Kirkland version is budget-friendly and lasts you up to 146 loads. It’s also great at getting rid of stains.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
