Dollar Tree is known for its highly competitive pricing and often the store has far better prices than you’ll find at competitors. While Dollar Tree might be retirees‘ go-to spot for a good deal, where are some items that are definitely worth buying, but there are some that you’re better off getting elsewhere. GOBankingRates shopped the Dollar Tree website and identified the items that retirees should splurge on, settle for or skip.

Also here are top Dollar Tree items retirees must buy while on budget.

Splurge On: Party Supplies and Decor

It’s hard to beat the prices on most of the party supplies and decor available at Dollar Tree, so definitely splurge on these items. For example, Dollar Tree ha some cute Easter egg tabletop decorations for $1.25 each. Home accents like the assorted straw woven baskets are an equally good deal and there are tons of great deals to be had on candle holders, like the black metal pedestal candle holder for $1.25.

Splurge On: Beverages

It’s rare to find an iced tea or juice for less than $2 these days, but Dollar Tree has these items for just $1.25 each. To get these deals, you’ll need to buy a case of 12, but you can see significant savings by buying beverages at Dollar Tree instead of at a grocery store or convenience store. Consider the AriZona sun brewed style iced tea, the Boost protein rich nutritional drink or the Welch’s orange pineapple drink.

Splurge On: Crafting Supplies

You can save money on your crafting essentials by shopping at Dollar Tree. The store has great prices on items like the floral garden ribbon assortment and floral garden wired jute cords. Pay attention to the lengths on these products, since the ribbon spools tend to be on the shorter ends, but if you don’t need a ton of ribbon, they can offer significant savings compared to what you would pay at a craft store.

Settle For: Food Storage

You can get some great deals on food storage containers at Dollar Tree, but shop carefully. Many customers who bought storage containers describe issues with lids not fitting or the containers leaking. To be safe, buy containers made by a trusted name brand, like the Rubbermaid take alongs square plastic storage containers with lids.

Settle For: Cleaning Supplies

The price may be right on cleaning supplies at Dollar Tree, but the quality of the products may be lacking. For example, reviews of the Home Store glass cleaner are poor, stating the product smells horrible and appears to be watered down.

Product like Scotch-Brite stainless steel scrubbing pads are a safer bet, since this is a well-known name brand product and the quality is likely to be good. Just use some discretion about what you buy and choose products you can trust.

Settle For: Makeup

Sticking to name brands is a good rule of thumb when buying makeup and cosmetics from Dollar Tree, too. Dollar Tree offers some unbeatable prices on cosmetics, but once again, quality matters. Remember that you’ll be putting these items directly on your skin. Some brands can include harmful ingredients in their products, so choose products from brands you trust, like the Pond’s make up remover facial wipes or the Blistex original medicated lip balm.

Skip: Pet Food

Dollar Tree doesn’t have the best deals on pet food and most of the brands they carry are low-quality. It’s always a good idea to buy pet food from a trusted manufacturer who crafts complete and balanced recipes designed to meet your pet’s nutritional needs during their stage of life. Talk to your veterinarian about the brands they would recommend.

Skip: Electronics

It might seem like Dollar Tree offers great deals on electronics, like charging cords, but these products tend to be very low-quality. If you need something to just get by for the moment, these electronics may do the trick, but you’re better off spending a little more for a higher-quality product that’s designed to last.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
