There’s a reason why savvy shoppers are loyal to Costco. From groceries to furniture you can score mega deals and keep more money in your wallets, which is why younger generations are now shopping at the warehouse giant, according to Business Insider.
As budget-conscious consumers hunt for savings, buying Kirkland Signature, Costco’s in-house brand is one way to stretch your dollar further. Kirkland is known for its high-quality products for a low price, but not everything from the label is worth buying.
Here are four Kirkland items to avoid if you want to save money.
Toilet Paper
Kirkland offers 30 rolls of two-ply toilet paper for $24.99, but regular shoppers have noticed a decline in the quality and have been vocal about it.
“We have bought Kirkland toilet paper for several years and our most recent purchase it is clear that Kirkland has changed there manufacture for toilet paper,” One reviewer on Costco’s website wrote. “This new toilet paper is absolute garbage. The old TP was soft and strong.”
On Reddit, others also complained about it. One user wrote, “Just as lockdown was beginning in 2020, I managed to snare multi-packs of both Kirkland and Sam’s Members Mark tp, so I was able to do a side-to-side (so to speak) comparison of the two brands. The Sam’s version is SO much better.”
Save your money and buy another brand.
Bacon Crumbles
A 20-ounce bag of bacon crumbles from Kirkland is $10.99, but many Redditors aren’t happy with the taste and the amount of fat. According to shoppers who were buyers of the product, it’s changed for the worse.
“Stopped purchasing around [two] years ago,” one person wrote. “Consistently seemed every single bag had more fat and gristle-y hard pieces than not. Haven’t looked back.”
“It was my favorite thing to buy but these last two times the quality changed drastically,” another Redditor shared. “I was really hoping it was a one off batch issue the first time but the second purchase — after [three] months between buying it — was just as bad.
Rotisserie Chicken
Kirkland’s rotisserie chicken has been a beloved staple by many for years Whether you’re in the mood for tacos, soup, a salad or pizza, you can have a nice meal for just $5, but for the last year or so, the chicken has under fire by shoppers for its smaller size and taste.
“Rotisserie chicken has a chemical taste. It looks fake plumped, too,” a Reddit user wrote. “I haven’t bought it in years. Produce is awful. I’ll buy a few things but won’t be renewing my membership.”
Meanwhile in another thread, several consumers are complaining about the size.
“They’re literally half the size from last year, we have to get 2 to make up for it!!” another Redditor wrote.
Kirkland Signature Nuts
A 2.5 pound bag of Kirkland Signature Extra Fancy Mixed Nuts will cost you $17.59, but many Costco shoppers don’t believe it’s worth buying.
An unhappy customer sounded off on Reddit: “I eat a ton of premium mixed nuts, or at least I used to. I bought [six] bags last time I was at Costco and just threw one bag away. I opened another and it was rancid, too. I’m returning the remaining bags.”
The shopper explained the bags don’t expire until July 2025, but stated, “I’d rather pay double than eat nasty stuff like that.”
The Bottom Line
There’s no denying that Costco has a top-notch wide ranging selection of basic necessities and household items at competitive prices, but according to warehouse shoppers, some things are better left on the shelf and not worthy of your money.
