Target’s seasonal aisles are known for trendy home decor, candles and other fun finds, but according to shopping experts, not everything is worth the money. Rising prices, shifting quality and better deals at competitors have some experts rethinking what they buy there each season.

Here’s what they say to skip at Target.

Tabletop Decor

Melissa Cid, consumer savings expert at MySavings.com, recommended avoiding seasonal tabletop decor at Target.

“Disposable Halloween napkins, Thanksgiving plates and Christmas table covers will cost you more money at Target,” Cid wrote in an email. “A pack of Halloween napkins is $3 for 20 at Target, while Walmart sells 45 napkins for just $2.97. Even Dollar Tree offers seasonal party goods for $1.25. The quality is going to be the same, so you may as well spend less and stretch your budget further.”

Reversible Tinsel Witch Character

This reversible tinsel witch character at Target is regularly $40 and has only a single rating with one star on Target’s website. According to Melanie Musson, retail finance expert at Quote.com, it’s not worth the price.

“This outdoor decor is cute, but unless you have some other light source shining on it, it’s hard to make out what it is because the lights are randomly placed and don’t follow the outline of the character,” Musson explained in an email.

Thanksgiving Honeycomb Decorations

When investing in seasonal decor, it’s a good idea to find something that lasts. These Meri Meri mixed Thanksgiving honeycomb decorations, which come in a pack of 11, is $32 with a three-star rating on Target’s website. However, Musson warned that they aren’t built to last more than one season.

“The best thing about these decorations is that they store flat. Unfortunately, they’re not durable and will probably only last one season, so you won’t need to store them,” Musson explained. “They look cheap, and if you’re going for a sophisticated feel, these decorations will not provide what you need.”

Quilted Oven Mitts

On sale, this set of four quilted Christmas oven mitts is $53.99, originally $113.99. If you want to save some money, you’ll have better luck at dollar stores.

“If you’re looking for seasonal oven mitts, consider checking out the selection at a dollar store, where you can find similar items for up to 90% less,” Musson said.
