Target might be known for bargains on household items, but some prices nevertheless have quietly risen.
The retailer at the end of last year made an effort to slash prices in “an attempt to narrow the price differential between them and rivals Walmart and Costco amid inflationary pressures and changing consumer spending habits,” said Brandon Warren, chief growth officer at The Barcode Group.
However, some goods missed the mark. Here are three household items that recently rose in price at Target.
Paper Goods
Prices of paper products have risen and are expected to continue to rise through 2026. In 2025, the cost of paper was expected to rise by 1.7%, according to Ibis World. This means that the price of toilet paper has also increased.
Consumers can save some costs by focusing on store brands, but will fare better with Walmart over Target. Walmart brand toilet paper wins for price per count at 16.8 cents per 100-count. Target brand toilet paper’s 21 cents per 100-count.Â
Cleaning SuppliesÂ
The cost of cleaning supplies, such as detergent and soap, have also recently gone up. In the summer of 2025, P&G said they would raise prices on products, including Tide and Dawn, in part because of tariffs, according to CNN.
Costco beats Target on Dawn Platinum detergent at $0.15 per ounce while Target sells it for $0.19 per fluid ounce.Â
Small Essentials
Overall small household essentials such as light bulbs have gone up in price. Philips suggested in the summer of last year that they would raise prices because of tariffs, according to Quartz.
You can save a few cents on a two-pack of Philips Smart Wi-Fi 60W Multi-Colored LED Light Bulbs at Walmart, which currently sells them for $19.24 instead of $19.29 at Target.Â
