Amazon has yet to fail to live up to the hype. It can deliver you just about any product you want for a comparatively low price — often the lowest price out there. And it can usually do so literally overnight, if not sooner. For retirees living on Social Security, Amazon is something like a retail lighthouse in the storm of increasingly high costs of living

If you’re getting by solely or mostly on these thin monthly checks, kudos to you; it isn’t easy. And it can be challenging to manage purchases that aren’t essential, like many winter-weather items are. What should you buy on Amazon this winter if you live on Social Security? Let’s look at nine standout things to “add to cart” during the chilliest of seasons

Snow Pusher + Scoop Tool

If you’re a homeowner and live in an area that gets hit hard in the winter, you know all too well the burden of dealing with snow piling up on your doorstep and driveway. Tackle it with this snow pusher and scooper combo tool on Amazon for $52.99.

Fingerless Mitten Gloves

Typing or texting in a freezing space and don’t want to stop but also have no idea how to cope with the cold? Get a pair of fingerless mitten gloves for women like these, which are on sale on Amazon for $7.99, marked down from $9.99. Those are designed for women, but there is also an option for men, for the same price of $7.99. Each version is available in a variety of colors.

Winter Beanie Hat

If last winter’s beanie hat is now threadbare or you’d like to add colors to your collection, head over to Amazon. For $5.99, you can get a cuffed winter beanie hat (unisex). This comes in a rather absurd amount of colors — from hot pink to pitch black. True, you can find similarly priced beanies at Target, but you won’t have nearly as many colors to choose from.

Wool Socks

Keep those tootsies cozy with a five-pack of thick Merino wool socks. They’re on Amazon for $18.99. Available in sizes medium or large, these socks come in an assortment of colors. We must say, they really do look durable and warm.

Long (Thermal) Underwear

A key to keeping warm in low temperatures is long underwear. Not only can you make use of them when going out by layering them under your clothing, they can also double as pajamas or loungewear. These Fruit of the Loom women’s thermal underwear sets, available in sizes XS-4X, go for as low as $13.80 on Amazon. Oddly, men will pay a bit more for the same product, but still not a terribly high amount: $15.99-16.99.

Electric/Heated Blanket

Want to stay totally warm in bed but don’t want to keep your thermostat sky high all night? Consider an electric/heated blanket. On Amazon, this 50- by 60-inch electric/heated blanket is on sale for $47.99, marked down from $59.99. This blanket is sherpa lined and machine-washable.

Heating Pad

If you don’t want or need a whole blanket but are looking for something toasty to help with, say, arthritic pain, a heating pad is a great compromise. This 12- by 24-inch flannel heating pad is on sale on Amazon. Previously priced at $20.91, you can now buy it for $17.69. It comes in a vast variety of colors.

ChapStick

Winter weather can be brutal on our precious pout — and ChapStick tends to be weirdly expensive in stores, where it’s often featured in checkout aisles, primed for an impulse buy. On Amazon, you can get a three-pack of ChapStick for $3.88, marked down from $4.75.

CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion

Dermatologists swear by CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, which many say is just as good, if not better, then far pricier lotions. A 19-ounce container of the stuff goes for $18.04 on Amazon. That works out to 95 cents per ounce, At Walmart, a smaller (16-ounce) container of this product goes for nearly as much — $16.97, working out to $1.06 per ounce.

Editor’s note: Pricing is accurate as of Jan. 21, 2025. Prices and availability are subject to change.
