While Costco has established a reputation for providing quality items at an affordable price, not every product resting on warehouse club shelves is a winner. And as spring approaches, consumers weary of the winter doldrums are looking to spend a bit of hard-earned cash on seasonal items which present an exceptional value proposition.

Which spring-related items are perhaps best to avoid when shopping at Costco?

Artika Blaze Outdoor Solar String Lights

This string of 20 Edison-style outdoor solar lights might seem the perfect fit to adorn your deck, patio or gazebo for a chic garden party or barbecue with friends.

Buyer beware, however. Numerous reviews have been posted for this product, and it was only able to accrue 2.6 stars out of a possible 5 — and the negative reviews (15) greatly outweigh the positive (10) ones.

“Bought six boxes they worked the first night no problem… now I am on day three and no light at all. I live in Southern California where we have plenty of sun. Don’t bother with these lights,” one unhappy customer wrote.

Broil King Baron Gas Grill

Speaking of barbecues: With so many to choose from, it might be wise to give a miss to the Broil King Baron 44C Gas Grill sold by Costco. It’s not exactly a cheap grill (coming in at $829.99), and despite being offered by a name brand, customer reviews peg it at just 3.5 stars out of 5, after 46 reviews.

Common complaints include that it was missing parts on arrival, was extremely difficult to put together and that the flame was very weak when attempting to cook. A moderate 3-star review mentioned the difficulty of assembly, and that it may not be worth the price tag as compared to less expensive grills.

Flexon Contractor-Grade Hose With Guard & Grip

With spring in the air, those with a green thumb — or even those wishing they had a gift with greenery — are likely to be eying the garden or lawn with anticipation of getting some work done.

That being said, perhaps it’s best to reconsider the purchase of this garden hose. Coming in at a whopping 268 reviews (and a less impressive average score of 3.3 stars out of 5), it seems that customers have significantly mixed opinions over this piece of hardware — in particular, complaints about the claims of it being “contractor grade” being overstated.

“This is a thin-walled hose that is stiff and very prone to kinking. I bought it at our local Costco. It is really annoying to have waterflow cut off because of kinks in the line. The low price is appealing but the quality is disappointing. If you are looking for a real contractor-grade hose, expect to pay [three] times the price for performance,” one highly-rated review read.
