Timing is everything, especially if you’re looking for the best deals to save money this summer.

“The items that you need most during the summer are the items that are certain to be the most expensive during the summer,” according to Melanie Musson, retail finance expert at Clearsurance.com. “Air conditioners, pools and fans are more expensive in the summer because people need them, and if they didn’t think ahead, they have to buy them then.”

Here are five things to never pay full price for in the summer.

Spring Decor

According to Musson, summer is a great time to find deals on spring decor. Retailers typically begin clearing out spring items at the end of the season to make room for summer inventory.

This can be anything from floral-themed home decor and wreaths to vases and pastel dishware. If you’re thinking ahead for next year, June and July are the best months to snag these items at low prices.

Plants and Seeds

At the beginning of summer, shoppers often find lower prices on plants and seeds. “Of course, you’ll only get to enjoy a partial season with outdoor plants when you wait for summer sales, but if they’re perennial, you can enjoy years of growth and blooms,” Musson said.

And if you buy seeds at a discount this summer, you can plant them next spring. “After a couple of years, the germination rate won’t be as high, but planting this year’s seeds next year should yield similar results to if you had planted them this spring,” she explained.

Grills and Outdoor Furniture

While grills and patio furniture may be on the pricier side at the start of the season, they tend to drop around August and September.

According to Reader’s Digest, the best time to buy a grill if you want to save money is near the end of summer and into early fall. Experts suggest waiting until Labor Day or later. You’ll trade selection for savings, but the price drop could be worth it.

The same goes for patio furniture. Homes and Gardens pointed out that the best time to buy outdoor furniture is from late August through early October, when retailers begin to clear out their inventory to make room for fall and holiday items.

Back-to-School Essentials

School just got out, but back-to-school deals are already popping up. According to The Krazy Coupon Lady, the Staples back-to-school deals started in June and last through September.

Amazon shoppers may also find some of the best prices on Prime Day, which is July 8-11 this year, on everything from backpacks and pencil cases to tech gadgets. The official Prime Day 2025 announcement stated that Prime members can find school tech starting at $15 and save up to 40% on school supplies.

Appliances

If you’re planning to upgrade your kitchen or laundry room, summer is one of the best times to buy. According to Angi, retailers offer bigger discounts on appliances during several holidays, like the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Retailers also host summer sales events for various appliances.

However, Angi noted that the year-round demand for kitchen appliances means prices don’t drop as dramatically as they do for other home appliances.
