One easy way to save money on groceries is to switch to store brands. These alternatives to expensive brands can save you 30% or more — serious savings to put toward other groceries. One of the more popular store brands is Great Value. This brand at Walmart offers lots of items beyond just food staples.
“These Great Value items aren’t just cheaper alternatives – they’re smart financial choices that don’t sacrifice quality,” said Andrew Lokenauth, money expert from Be Fluent in Finance. “And in this economy, those savings matter more than ever.”
Lokenauth said he’s spent years advising clients on strategies and Walmart’s Great Value brand keeps surprising him with its quality. Below are the items he said consistently save his clients serious cash — upwards of more than $100 a month.
Also here is the best way to spend $25 at Walmart this fall.

Sparkling Water
- Price: 97 cents
Lokenauth said he did a test with sparkling water products from an expensive brand and Great Value’s version at Walmart. He said no one could tell the difference and that switching to the Great Value brand saves some of his clients up to $20 a month.

Paper Plates
- Price: $5.58 (100 count)
“The paper products from Great Value are absolute gold,” Lokenauth said. He switched all his household supplies to Great Value and sees savings of $35 per month. He said the quality is basically the same as more expensive brands.

Ice Cream
- Price: $2.97
“This might sound weird coming from a financial advisor, but the [Great Value] vanilla bean is legitimately better than much more expensive brands — and it’s usually $2 to $3 cheaper per container. Perfect for summer gatherings without breaking the bank,” Lokenauth said.

Bottled Water
- Price: $5.47
Lokenauth called the Great Value bottled water “another no-brainer.” “For my clients who insist on bottled water, Great Value’s 40-pack saves them roughly $8 compared to more expensive alternatives,” he added.

Peanut Butter
- Price: $1.97 (16-ounce jar)
According to Lokenauth, the Great Value peanut butter is practically identical to expensive brands but costs about 30% less.
Buying Great Value Is the Way To Save
“Based on tracking hundreds of client budgets, switching to Great Value for these basics typically saves $75 to $100 per month for a family of four,” Lokenauth explained. “That’s some serious cash you could put toward emergency savings or retirement — and trust me, as someone who reviews budgets all day, those little switches add up fast.”
Another financial expert who talked to GOBankingRates shared similar stories about clients or themself saving serious money by switching to Great Value products.
“If you swap out just a few items each week, you’ll probably save close to $100 by the end of the month,” said Taylor Kovar, certified financial planner (CFP) and CEO of 11 Financial. “That’s money you can use for something fun with your family or put toward savings instead of pouring it into labels.”
