Capital One has two separate routing numbers for their two banking entities — Capital One, N.A. and Capital One Bank (USA), N.A. 

Capital One banks use ACH routing numbers to process debits and payments between U.S. bank accounts. These codes identify your bank account information in order to process check transactions and allow you to make automatic payments, online payments and money transfers.

So, when you use money transfer apps like Cash App or Zelle, Capital One can identify the exact payment to be sent to or from your specific bank account.

Where Can You Find Capital One Routing Numbers?

If you have opened a Capital One checking account, you’ll find the routing number in the bottom left corner of a paper check. Your routing number is the first nine digits on the bottom line. Your check’s routing number is followed in sequence from left to right by your checking account number and the check number. This number is vital not just for checks but also for linking external accounts like savings accounts or CD accounts, ensuring your money is always in the right place.

If you don’t have access to one of your Capital One checks, you can find your routing number in other ways:

• Call or email a Capital One customer service representative or visit a local Capital One branch to ask.

Financial institutions use routing numbers, which are unique, nine-digit numbers that identify a bank. Credit unions and banks like Capital One use routing numbers for electronic transactions, such as online bill payments, funds transfers, digital checking and direct deposits.

The American Bankers Association issues routing numbers to financial institutions that have Federal Reserve bank accounts. Larger banks have different routing numbers for use in different states. They also use separate routing numbers for different types of electronic transactions, such as wire transfers and Automated Clearing House transactions.

Why Does Capital One Use Routing Numbers?

Capital One uses routing numbers to make sure that funds are seamlessly transferred from one financial institution to another during an electronic transaction. 

You can use your Capital One routing number to:

• Pay your bills online
• Set up direct deposit of your paycheck
• Make wire transfers
• Schedule automatic online payments
• Use payment apps and digital wallets
• Make external bank electronic funds transfers

For international wire transfers, you will also need to include a SWIFT code in addition to your routing number. 

A SWIFT code is a secure global bank code that verifies a bank’s identity for an international transaction. SWIFT codes authenticate a bank’s country of origin and specific location.
