Capital One is best known for its high-quality rewards credit cards. But the financial services company also offers a fee-free, easy-to-use online checking account. Capital One is also known for generous bonus offers for opening a credit card.

With Capital One, you gain the advantages of local branches and a network of 70,000-plus fee-free ATMs, combined with the convenience and low cost of online banking.

GOBankingRates named Capital One as one of the Best National Banks of 2024, specifically for no fees and no minimum account balances. GOBankingRates also ranked the Capital One 360 Checking account among the Best Checking Accounts of 2024.

Here’s a look at key features of the Capital One 360 Checking account.

Feature Key Details
Overdraft protection Yes

Benefits

The Capital One 360 Checking account has no monthly fees and no minimum deposit to open the account. You can receive direct deposits up to two days before you might with other banks through the early paycheck program. The Capital One mobile app makes it easy to deposit checks remotely, turn your debit card on and off, and track your spending. Set alerts for transactions or when your account hits below a certain balance.

You can also add cash to your checking account in CVS, Walgreens or Duane Reade locations, or send and receive money between family and friends using Zelle.

No-Fee Overdraft Options

You can choose from a few options to avoid the embarrassment of having your purchase or ATM transaction declined. If you deposit at least $250 into your account through eligible deposits during two of three prior calendar months, you gain access to Capital One’s unique No-Fee Overdraft service. For every month you meet the requirements, Capital One may cover purchases and even ATM withdrawals that will put your account in the negative. However, keep in mind that if you don’t deposit funds promptly to cover the overdraft, Capital One may decline subsequent transactions or even close your account at its discretion.

You can also choose overdraft protection through other linked Capital One accounts, such as Capital One 360 Performance Savings, or a money market account. Finally, you can opt out of overdraft protection, which means your transactions will be declined if they would exceed your account balance.

Fees

This is easy; Capital One 360 has no monthly maintenance fee, no overdraft fees, no fees for incoming domestic wire transfers and no fees on out-of-network ATMs. Keep in mind that the ATM operator may charge a fee if you aren’t using a Capital One, MoneyPass or Allpoint ATM.

If you find that you need personal checks, your first order of 50 checks is free. After that, Capital One charges $20 for 50 checks or $25 for 100 personal checks. Cashier’s checks are $10 at a Capital One branch or $20 online, shipped overnight.

How To Open a Capital One 360 Checking Account

You can open a Capital One checking account online or in a branch or a smaller Capital One Café. A Capital One Café is a unique experience that combines public workspaces, food and beverages with in-person banking services from a Capital One ambassador.

Wherever you open the account, you’ll need some basic information like a government ID, your Social Security or tax ID number, and your address and phone number. Once you open the account, you’ll have 60 days to fund it through a deposited check, mobile check deposit, cash deposit through a branch or ATM, or a transfer from another bank account.
