Citi is one of the largest banks in the U.S., with $1.70 trillion in assets. Together with JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, it is considered one of the Big Four banks.

When you open a checking account with Citi, you’ll gain access to 65,000-plus ATMs across the U.S. and online banking services like mobile deposit and Zelle through the Citi mobile app. Citi checking accounts also have no overdraft or returned item fees, which can save you hundreds of dollars if you are the type of person who regularly lets your account run in the red.

Citi Checking Accounts

Citi offers two regular checking accounts and three relationship tiers. Let’s explore the options, fees and requirements for each. Citi checking accounts do not require a minimum opening deposit.

Account or Relationship Tier Overdraft Protection Free checks Minimum Deposit or Balance
Citi Access Checking account No No No minimum deposit
Citi Regular Checking account Yes No No minimum deposit
Citi Priority relationship tier Yes Yes $30,000 combined average monthly balance
Citigold® relationship tier Yes Yes $200,000 combined average monthly balance
Citigold® Private Client relationship tier Yes Yes $1 million combined average monthly balance

When you open an Access Checking or Regular Checking account between now and Oct. 8 as a new checking customer with Citi, you can earn $300 when you complete the qualifying activities. To earn the cash, you must have at least two Enhanced Direct Deposits within 90 calendar days from opening the account, totaling at least $1,500 or more combined. The funds will be deposited into your account within 30 calendar days after you complete the activities.

Citi also has other promotions going on for relationship tier clients and credit card customers.

Additionally, Citi offers four different business checking accounts for small businesses up to enterprise-level customers.

Citi Access Checking Account

Citi Access Checking was rated as a certified low-cost account by the Bank On National Account Standards. This checkless bank account has no overdraft or returned item fees, but certain transactions won’t be authorized if it would cause you to exceed your available balance. This can help you learn to manage your money better without falling behind. There is no minimum deposit required to open an account, although you must fund the account within 90 days.

Fees

  • Monthly service fees: See the Citi website for details on monthly fees.
  • ATM fees: You’ll pay a $2.50 fee if you use a non-Citi ATM.

Citi Regular Checking Account

Citi’s regular, everyday checking account offers unlimited check-writing capabilities with no fee, along with all the benefits of an Access Checking account. Citi never charges overdraft or returned item fees, although the bank may decline transactions that would put your account in overdraft without warning or cause.

Fees

  • ATM fees: The $2.50 fee for non-Citi ATMs is waived with $250-plus in Enhanced Direct Deposits.

Citi Priority gives you access to higher savings account interest rates and complimentary financial checkups from a Citi Personal Wealth Management professional.
