Can autopay cost you money in 2026?

That could be the case. Some services will offer a discount to use autopay, but when does that stop being a benefit? Here’s what ChatGPT had to say.

There’s No Longer a Discount

Though initially, setting up autopay can cost you less money, sometimes that benefit only applies for a certain amount of time. ChatGPT suggested tracking your expenses to make sure it’s still financially advantageous to enroll in autopay. “If a biller doesn’t offer a discount, waived fee or interest reduction for autopay, then autopay is just convenience — not savings,” the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot said.

The Price Has Increased

Sometimes, billers will raise the price or erroneously charge more for a product and you won’t notice because you’re enrolled in autopay. This can be a costly downside of automatic payments. ChatGPT said to continuously check your statements to make sure the price hasn’t gone up or you were charged more by mistake.

Your Credit Card Autopay Is Set Up To Cost You

If you use your credit card to make automatic payments, this can be an issue. “If autopay is set to minimum payment only, you end up paying interest — which costs far more than any convenience benefit,” the AI chatbot said. Make sure your credit card settings benefit you when it comes to automatic payments, rather than get you in trouble.

You Incur Overdraft Fees

Because some automatic payments don’t send a notification to you before they happen, you might not realize you don’t have the money to pay. ChatGPT said this can lead to overdraft fees. A good way to make sure this doesn’t happen is to change your settings so you always get an email or text notification before an automatic payment is made.
