Oliver Stone has a point: Money never sleeps — but the stock market does. If you’re wondering, “Is the stock market open today?” it depends on whether it’s a weekday, holiday or if early closures apply. Keep reading to learn when major exchanges like the NYSE and Nasdaq are open.

Regular Trading Hours for Major Stock Exchanges

Here’s a look at the trading hours you can expect for the major stock exchanges:

Exchange Hours Days
NYSE 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST Monday through Friday
Nasdaq 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST Monday through Friday
London Stock Exchange 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. GMT Monday through Friday
Frankfurt Stock Exchange 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. CET Monday through Friday
Stockholm Stock Exchange 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CET Monday through Friday
Tokyo Stock Exchange 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. JST Monday through Friday

Stock Market Holidays

No matter if it’s a bull or a bear market, stock market closures are dictated by holidays and weekends. In all, there are 10 calendar days per year when the stock markets close.

Here are the stock market holidays for 2025 and the dates they fall or are observed on.

Holiday 2025
New Year’s Day Jan. 1
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 20
Presidents Day (Washington’s Birthday) Feb. 17
Good Friday April 18
Memorial Day May 26
Juneteenth June 19
Independence Day July 4
Labor Day Sept. 1
Thanksgiving Day Nov. 27
Christmas Dec. 25

If a market holiday falls on a weekend, the stock market will close on the Friday before or Monday after that holiday. For example, if Christmas falls on a Sunday, the stock market will be closed on the Monday that follows.

Early Market Closures

The NYSE closes early the day before or after a few holidays. For 2025, the NYSE will close at 1 p.m. on the following days:

Day 2025
The day before Independence Day July 3
The day after Thanksgiving Day Nov. 28
The day before Christmas Day Dec. 24

Be sure to place your stock order before 1 p.m. on these days — otherwise, you’ll miss your chance.

Early Market Closures Due to Weather or National Events

During a major national crisis, the NYSE might not open. For example, it didn’t open on Sept. 11, 2001, and remained closed for several days. It also closed during Hurricane Sandy.

You can head to the NSYE website to find out if the exchange is closed due to weather or national events.

Pre-Market and After-Trading Hours

Trading in pre-market or after-trading hours has advantages versus trading during regular hours. The convenience and flexibility allow investors to react more readily to news events that could affect companies. Because companies release earnings after regular trading hours, you could also use that figure to better strategize the orders you place.

But you need to also consider the limitations of pre-market and after-hours trading. For one, you can only place limit orders during this time, which means you would either buy or sell a stock at a limited designated price. And because there are generally fewer shares being traded during these hours, there is more volatility concerning share price and liquidity — the spread between the highest asking price and lowest selling price.

Conclusion

The stock market generally runs during business hours on weekdays. But as an investor, you can make trades before or after market hours to suit your schedule.
