We all know a family member who has an old, scratched-up appliance that’s been working for decades, while some of the newest home appliances with the latest technology seem to break down frequently.

Appliances are a huge purchase for homeowners and one that people are making more frequently. Data from American Home Shield shows that four in five homeowners plan to replace an appliance this year and expect the cost to be more than $4,000.

Fortunately, there are some brands still in existence today that have excellent reputations and warranties. These companies create appliances that are known to last for 20 years or more. Although they may cost more upfront, the generous warranties and longevity make them good buys for homeowners who care about purchasing long-lasting appliances for their home.

In contrast, here are six small appliances that are not worth the money.

Speed Queen Washer and Dryer

  • Price: starting at $1,339

Speed Queen is a washer and dryer brand that’s been in operation for over 110 years. Originally, Speed Queen made washers and dryers for commercial laundromats. However, the company eventually used its commercial technology to make washers and dryers for households. Speed Queen has a calculator on its website that shows their machines are expected to last 25 years. Additionally, Speed Queen offers a seven-year warranty that includes labor.

Sub-Zero Refrigerators

  • Price: starting at $2,960

Sub-Zero refrigerators are designed to last 20 years, according to the retailer, which conducts extensive testing on its products to ensure their durability. For example, Sub-Zero tests refrigerator door hinges 300,000 times to ensure they can withstand daily family use.

The company was founded in 1945 and has consistently prioritized high-quality products and expertly designed appliances. Additionally, the brand’s modern products also come with built-in air purification systems.

Vitamix Blenders

  • Price: starting at $379.95

Vitamix has been in business since 1921 and is now a global business with retailers in 130 countries. Vitamix tests its components for longevity, with the goal of having the blenders last for decades. Part of what makes the Vitamix unique is its aircraft-grade stainless steel blades.

Vitamix also offers a warranty of up to 10 years on its products. However, it’s not uncommon for Vitamix blenders to last 20 years or more.

KitchenAid Stand Mixer

  • Price: starting at $399.99

KitchenAid stand mixers are iconic and many people still use KitchenAid mixers handed down to them by their parents and grandparents. Part of what makes these mixers last a long time is that they have a simple design and numerous replacement parts. Because KitchenAid mixers don’t have extensive electronic interfaces, they are easy to maintain and repair. Additionally, the design has remained largely unchanged since 1919.

Maintenance Tips

If you purchase one of the appliances above (or any appliance), a few tips to make them last longer are to choose simple models and regularly clean them. If you notice that one of your appliances needs repair, schedule a repair appointment. Otherwise, minor problems could morph into bigger ones. With proper maintenance, it’s possible to ensure your appliances last up to 20 years or more.
