After a rocky couple of years, Dollar Tree announced its offloading of discount brand Family Dollar for $1 billion — a fraction of its $9 billion purchase price in 2015.

Dollar Tree closed 600 Family Dollar locations in 2024 and plans to close an additional 370 underperforming stores over the next few years, the company stated last year. According to CBS News, the planned closures represent around 15% of its Family Dollar locations.

These closures will mainly affect lower-income communities, and many families in these areas rely on discount stores for groceries and everyday household items.

As Family Dollar shutters its doors, many shoppers will be left searching for budget-friendly alternatives. Here’s a look at some affordable options.

Dollar Tree

Although Dollar Tree also plans to close some of its stores, it’s still a strong alternative for budget-conscious shoppers. Dollar Tree offers similar items as Family Dollar, including groceries, cleaning supplies, personal care products and household essentials.

Costs range anywhere from $1.25 to $7.

Dollar General

Dollar General is another budget-friendly discount store, but it tends to have a larger selection of goods, including more grocery items and brand-name products. You might be hard-pressed to find something that’s only a dollar, but the chain sells most items at $10 or less.

Walmart

Walmart is a giant in the discount retail sector and is much more of a one-stop-shop compared to Family Dollar and its alternatives. While discount stores like Family Dollar focus on basic household items, Walmart offers everything from groceries and clothing to electronics, home goods and even pharmaceuticals.

Aldi

Aldi is a discount supermarket known for its commitment to high-quality products at an affordable price. The store primarily sells grocery items, but you can also find a rotating selection of seasonal items in the famous “aisle of shame.”

While both stores offer lower prices in smaller locations, Family Dollar focuses more on offering a wide variety of everyday items, while Aldi provides more of a limited selection.

Five Below

Five Below serves a different demographic than Family Dollar, but both have affordable prices. Five Below specializes in trendy merchandise for teens and pre-teens.

All items are priced at $5 or less, unless you shop from the store’s “Five Beyond” concept, which is priced at $6 or more.
