Inflation has come down since its 40-year high in 2022, but shoppers still feel its effects and have cut back on discretionary spending. Some of the biggest retailers in the U.S., including Walmart and Target, have slashed prices to get customers back in stores.
Over the past four years, prices have surged by more than 20% because of the pandemic, and more recently, the White House also cited corporate greed as the reason for higher prices, said NBC News senior business correspondent Christine Romans said on Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist. To fight back, consumers have made some changes to their shopping habits by shopping at other stores, using coupons and switching to generic brands to save money.
Retailers have responded. According to Romans, Walgreens lowered prices on 1,300 products and Target recently dropped prices on about 5,000 items. Adobe Analytics, which tracks e-commerce sales, found that the cheapest items purchased increased significantly across all major categories, especially personal care products (up 96%), electronics (up 64%), apparel (up 47%) and more. Vivek Pandya, manager of Adobe Digital Insights, said some of these merchants built up excess inventory over the last couple of years and are now lowering prices to get rid of extra inventory, AARP reported.
Here are various stores where consumers are getting the best deals.
